Hopewell Central High School’s Boys Unified Track Team Recognized

by Angela Jacobs

At Monday night’s Hopewell Valley Regional School District Board of Education meeting, the Boys Unified Track Team was celebrated for their many accomplishments during the spring track season. In its first year, the team took first place in

the 4×400 and 4×100 relays at the Voorhees Invitational. At the Meet of Champions, they won first in the 4×400 relay, with a time of 4:29:77, 20 seconds faster than the team that took second. At the same competition, Robert Wilson took third in the long jump and third in the 100m, Elliott Brown ranked fifth in the long jump, and Steven Hu placed sixth in the shot put.

The team, coached by Chris Fossel, Jorge Merino, and Aaron Oldfield, is a joint program between Special Olympics New Jersey and the N.J.S.I.A.A. (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association). The goal of forming unified teams across New Jersey’s high schools is to foster meaningful relationships between athletes with and without intellectual disabilities while training and competing.
