Before I purchased my boot camp Groupon last year, my fitness level was holding steady at “meandering stroll around the neighborhood at old lady pace.” I did a short post-maternity stint with the Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred DVD that I stole from my sister. I got through 7 non-consecutive days, and was then sucked in by afternoon re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy. I’m not what you would call an “athletic” or “sporty” or “coordinated” girl. Never played sports. I’ve never been one to “go for a run.” I was a high school cheerleader, and loved every minute of it, but 15 years later, I can admit that I wasn’t an athlete. So this was a big deal.
Ugh. Boot camp just wasn’t for me. The classes weren’t that convenient, the instructor was neither brutal nor uplifting, and I didn’t feel an overwhelming desire to plunk down my very meager amount of fun money for more classes. So I turned to my amazing Google skillz and my trusty iPhone4. And I found my current fitness obsession. Tone It Up.
Mary’s reaction, when I told her that I use the workouts from TIU, can be summed up as: “Um, no.” And I freely admit, their use of the word “booty” and the constant self-bikini-posts is a bit disturbing to 30-something, professional women that are based mainly in reality. But the weekly workouts and constant motivation and check-in-cheerleader-mentality is right up my alley. I.Am.Obsessed.
I subscribe to their emails, I’ve purchased the app, and I download the weekly printable pdf workouts to my phone: I use at least 2-3 of their workouts every week. Most workouts are body-weight based or you’re using small hand weights or a stability ball: all tools that I have available at home or at my work-gym. The TIU trainers, the very fit, the very adorable, California girls Karena & Katrina know what they’re doing. And it’s hard to look away.
So then I bit the bullet. I actually purchased their nutrition plan, and not one, but two of their Beach Babe DVDs. I also bought their Perfect Fit Protein powder. I am officially a walking advertisment.
And here’s the booty-kicker: I have to say, it works. I KNOW. I am more toned and stronger than I was 6 months ago, without a doubt. I KNOW. I’m nowhere near where I want to be, but I feel good. I feel better.
So that’s what motivated me to get serious, tone it up, slim it down, eat healthier, mind my calories, LAY OFF THE BOOZE (um, sorry, no. just no.), and be honest with myself.
I drink spinach now. You bet your sweet booty I do. More on that later, cool kids.
