Lawrence High School Junior Extends Sympathy to Robbinsville Community

by Mary Galioto

Tristan Cadet, a junior at Lawrence High School, extended a gesture of sympathy this month that seemed so simple but is a remarkable example of human kindness.

When Tristan heard about the sudden death of Steven Meyer, Superintendent of Robbinsville schools, he wondered what he could do to help ease the sadness of the neighboring community of Robbinsville.

“The Robbinsville community suffered a great loss. I was deeply saddened after hearing the news and felt that something should be done to show that they are not alone in this time of mourning,” said Tristan. “I wondered what my school would do — whether we were going to send cards — so I asked the administration, Ms. Welsh (his school counselor) and then the student council.”

Lawrence was scheduled to have a meet with Robbinsville, so Tristan spoke with the high school athletic director and came up with the idea of making a banner. Tristan coordinated with the art teacher for paint, purchased paper, and organized a group of students to create the banner. The phrase “United in One Nest” simply came to Tristan in a moment of inspiration symbolizing both high school mascots: the Cardinals and the Ravens.

“Often people say, ‘I hope someone does something,’ but why can’t that someone be you? Don’t be afraid to take that step,” said tristan.

For the next few days, the school staff and students signed the banner at lunch and wrote words of encouragement around the the letters “United in One Nest” and the banner was presented to the Robbinsville students at the meet.

“They were all deeply touched and very thankful,” said Tristan on a Facebook post. “I’m not writing this post to brag about this idea I came up with, I’m writing it to show that we shouldn’t be afraid to take it upon ourselves to try and make a difference, no matter how big or how small. It’s easy to just say, ‘I feel so bad, I hope someone does something,’ but why not that someone be you?”

Tristan humbly attributes his kindness to his involvement in the Community Christian Choir, which rehearses at Pond Road Middle School in Robbinsville, and his community as a Seventh Day Adventist.

“My thoughts and prayers are still with the Robbinsville community,” shared Tristan, “And I pray that God brings them comfort during this difficult time.”
