Lawrence Township Celebrates Arbor Day

by MercerMe Staff

The Lawrence Township Shade Tree Advisory Committee conducted an Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Municipal Building. The Department of Public Works planted a large Norway spruce to replace a tree lost in a winter storm and the Township Council issued a proclamation recognizing Arbor Day.

“It is a pleasure to attend our community’s Arbor Day event and celebrate the importance of trees,” said Lawrence Township Mayor Dr. David Maffei. “Lawrence Township continues its hard work and dedication to preserve our woods and specimen trees as well as our environment.”

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has been promoting Arbor Day since 1949, when the New Jersey legislature designated the last Friday in April as the official day to honor trees and those who take care of them. The Township has recognized Arbor Day every year with tree related activities since 1996. The Lawrence Shade Tree Advisory Committee, which meets the fourth Monday of each month, was created by the Township Council to provide advice on street tree matters.
