New HVRSD Jazz Ensemble Places at Berklee College of Music Festival Competition

by Mary Galioto

The Choral Program at Hopewell Valley Central High School (HVCHS) broke new ground last month when twenty-one students from HVCHS Chamber Singers, in their newly formed a jazz ensemble, Vox Central Jazz, competed at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival.

The HVRSD students, who formed Vox Central Jazz, dedicated long hours to learn about the style of vocal jazz under the guidance of Randy White, Director of Choirs at HVCHS, who attended the University of Northern Colorado where he was involved with a Grammy Award winning jazz music program.

After all the hard work, Vox Central Jazz competed in the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival V1 class, on February 6, 2016, and placed 3rd out of 16 competing schools from many states along the east coast.

The HVCHS students received high praise for their performance, along with beneficial feedback from the panel of Berklee professors serving as clinicians for the festival.

Vox Central Jazz will be competing at the Roxbury Invitational in March, as will the Chamber Singers.  There will also be a Jazz and A Cappella Concert at Central High School on June 13, 2016, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center, 259 Pennington-Titusville Road, Pennington.
