If you’re sticking around our neck of Mercer County for the 4th of July weekend, there are several opportunities to catch fireworks, hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence, or get into the spirit with children’s relay races. Here are some of the events going on to help you celebrate America’s Independence Day and commemorate the 4th of July.
Wednesday, July 2
9 p.m. — The Spirit of Princeton hosts fireworks at the fields next to the Princeton University stadium, along Western Way. Gates open at 7 p.m. for picnics — no alcohol or smoking. Free and open to the public. Parking available in university Lot 21 below the fields of Faculty Road, as well as in the university parking garage on Prospect Street. Thursday, July 3
5 p.m. — Ewing Township kicks off a fireworks show on Green Lane behind The College of New Jersey around with a DJ followed by live music around 6 p.m. The event also includes food, games and the opportunity to interact with emergency personnel. Fireworks are scheduled to begin around dusk, between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
6 p.m. — Hamilton Township fireworks and concert begins near the Kuser Road entrance of Veterans Park. Following opening ceremonies, the Fabulous Greaseband will perform, followed by fireworks after dark. In case of rain, the event will happen on Saturday.
7:05 p.m. — The Trenton Thunder hosts the Portland Sea Dogs and will have fireworks after the game. For more information, visit www.trentonthunder.com.
Friday, July 4
9 a.m. — Pennington Parks & Recreation hosts the July 4th relay races at the Pennington School track off Burd Street in Pennington Borough. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by races, relays and the long jump for children ages 3-12. Race events kick off at 9:40 a.m. and refreshments are provided. The event is free.
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Washington Crossing Historic Park hosts an Independence Day celebration featuring living historians demonstrating their crafts, tours of historic buildings, and readings of the Declaration of Independence at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Friends of Washington Crossing Park and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the event is $8 for adults (12 and over), $4 for children (ages 5-11) and free for children under 5. 11 a.m. — Ewing Township will host a parade beginning at Parkside Avenue ending on Parkway Avenue honoring local first responders.
Saturday, July 5
7 p.m. — Lawrence Township hosts a fireworks display at Rider University. A concert begins at 7:30 pm and fireworks are expected to start at 9:45 pm. Local radio station 107.7 FM the Rider Bronc also will host a live broadcast of the event. For more information, visit www.lawrencetwp.com.
