Acclaimed local author Alan Maimon to be featured at Hopewell Library lecture series

by Community Contributor

Twilight in Hazard: An Appalachian Reckoning, written by Hopewell Borough resident Alan Maimon, will be featured at the Hopewell Public Library’s “Wednesday Night Out” lecture series September 1, 7pm, at the Hopewell Train Station, 2 Railroad Place.

Maimon is an award-winning journalist and the author of Twilight in Hazard (June 2021), as well as several sports books. He was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. He started his professional writing career as a news assistant and sportswriter in the Berlin bureau of The New York Times. He currently is a staff investigator for Centurion Ministries, a Princeton, NJ-based nonprofit that works to vindicate and free wrongfully convicted prisoners.

From the press release: “This is the book that J.D. Vance should have written. From investigative reporter and Pulitzer Prize finalist Alan Maimon comes to the story of how a perfect storm of events has had a devastating impact on the life in small town Appalachia, and on the soul of shaken nation. Maimon provides a comprehensive analysis of the region’s recent history—the devastating opiate crisis, the intense religious allegiances, the bitter, bareknuckled political rivalries, and the faltering attempts to emerge from a century-long coal-based economy. He learns that everything—and nothing—you have heard about the region is true. It is a region whose generations-long struggles are driven by quintessentially American forces. The era-defining events of the early 2000s provide the basis for an exploration of where the region and our country stand today. Eastern Kentucky is a microcosm, the state of the nation in the big picture.

“Maimon’s sharp observations and personal stake in the subject make this a standout account of what ails rural America. — Publishers Weekly”
