An Oxcuse to Spend an Oxfternoon at Capital Health

by Mary Galioto

IMG_5035What oxcuse’ to ‘oxamine’ puns on the word “ox” than an ‘oxternoon’ at the art gallery at Capital Health Hospital in Hopewell?

MercerMe covered some basics about the “Stampede” back in April. But in case you haven’t ‘herd’ the details about the fiberglass oxen around Hopewell Valley these past few months, they are are part of the Hopewell Valley Arts Council’s “Stampede.” As the HV Arts Council’s first major initiative, it is a “collaboration of business, art, community and philanthropy,” according to their summary of the project.

moms clubThe original design submissions are on display along the light-filled walls of Capital Health’s Roma Bank Art and Healing Gallery on the 2nd floor mezzanine. The exhibit is open 24/7 (you know, because it’s a hospital) and runs until June 27th. And it is easy to find — follow signs for the main entrance and then ask the person at the info desk for directions to the “gold elevators” to the art gallery. It’s fun. It’s free. It’s air conditioned.

Many of the sponsors and artists are organizations, schools, friends and neighbors we all know and it is fun to see the artist expression along with their oxen punned themes.

By late summer of this year, each artist or group of artists will have completed transforming their renderings onto the life-sized oxen sculptures. The oxen will then be placed in various locations throughout Hopewell Valley. I’m looking forward to comparing the original designs with the final product.

Here are some photo highlights with my little girls and a friend:

So many more exciting Stampede events are on the horizon. Make sure you stay tuned so you don’t miss a moment!
