Blue Angels and Thunderbirds perform tribute to COVID-19 front lines

by Amie Rukenstein

The US Air Force Air Demonstration squadron, the Thunderbirds, and the US Navy Flight Demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, saluted COVID-19 frontline responders, healthcare workers, and essential employees in a formation flight over New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia this afternoon.

“We are truly excited to take to the skies with our Navy counterparts for a nationwide tribute to the men and women keeping our communities safe,” said US Air Force Lt. Col. John Caldwell, Thunderbird 1 and mission commander for the flyover.

From New York to Philadelphia, the air show and the brilliant blue skies brought out crowds (practicing social distancing) most haven’t seen for months.

Speculation was strong this morning about best viewing sites in the Hopewell Valley. Hopefuls along the Delaware River were disappointed that they could hear the planes but got no glimpse. Viewers at Woolsey Park, those near the Mercer County airport, and a lucky few on the roof of Capital Health got the best views.
