Boggs Barrett Soccer Camp Must Find New Home for Summer 2017

by Angela Jacobs

Soccer and lacrosse programs have grown exponentially in Lawrence Township. Despite adding use of fields at Twin Pines, NJNG Armory, and the high school to the Recreation Department’s list of available fields, which also includes three Village Park fields and the Zimmer field at Central Park, the insatiable appetite of residents still exceed Township supply. In order to protect fields from damage caused by overuse and to prioritize availability for non-profit Township programs that cater solely to Township residents, the Lawrence Town Council notified for-profit entities they could no longer rent Township fields last year.

At Tuesday evening’s Town Council meeting, many friends (adults and children) of the Boggs Barrett Soccer Camp, a for-profit entity, spoke out in support, asking the Council to reconsider its decision not to rent to its organization.

Reading from a letter sent to the Council, David Boggs, Director and Co-owner said, “We at the Boggs Barrett Soccer Camp are asking that you allow us to continue to provide an amazing experience for Lawrence Township residents next summer 2017 by allowing us to rent the Village Park soccer fields to run our camp.”

According to Boggs, the majority of kids who attend the camp live in the township, and many of its staff are LTPS educators and former students. Council asked Boggs for an exact number of Township children that participate in the camp each summer but he was unable to provide it at that time.

Though the Council affirmed its reasons for last year’s policy change and little hope that it would reconsider its decision, an online petition launched by the camp hours before the meeting has grown to 347 signatures at the time of this publication.
