Cemetery Images by Local Photographer Coming to Hopewell Branch Library

by Mary Galioto

Melding the macabre and majestic, local photographer and graphic designer, Cheryl Jackson, captures images of cemeteries, graveyards, creepy dolls, abandonment and urban exploration. Her photography will be displayed in two upcoming local art exhibits, as well as will be featured in Weird NJ in the October 2015 issue.

“My son once said, ‘You are going to another cemetery, again? You are going to end up there eventually.’ I said, ‘So bury me with my camera!’”

Jackson, a life-long Titusville resident, says that her passion has always been photography, starting out with 126 and 110 Instamatics, taking photos of almost anything – family, friends, local parades, vacations, nature, and (of course) cemeteries and creepy dolls.

“I often get, ‘You take pictures of what?’,” laughed Jackson. ““I love all photography – nature, landscapes, travel, people, photojournalism, documentary, conceptual, architecture, abstract — but I am most drawn to the exploration of cemeteries and graveyards. They are full of history, amazing art, mystery, and stories — stories of individuals and communities of those who are laid to rest there.”

Jackson, who is a graphic designer and production artist, has been shooting primarily as  a hobby but has begun to expand her business, Cheryl Jackson OddPhotog.

“I’ve sold my work at various local events and some of my cemetery photography is being used in an educational workshop. I have even been asked if I do workshops, as well,” said Jackson.

Jackson’s cemetery photography will be featured at the Hopewell Branch of the Mercer County Library System in October 2015 and is sure to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. The exhibit’s opening reception will be on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from noon to 3:00pm and attendees will get to view her jaw-dropping photography and have the chance to meet Jackson. Refreshments will be served. The Hopewell Branch Library is located at 245 Pennington-Titusville Road, Pennington, NJ.

If you miss all of that, the October 2015 issue (#45) of Weird NJ will feature Jackson’s “creepy” doll photography and her work will also be displayed in January 2016, at the Ewing Branch of the Mercer County Library System, located at 61 Scotch Road, Ewing, NJ.
