Community Workshop on Executive Function – Helping Students Bridge the Gap between Knowing and Doing

by Mary Galioto

If you have a child with learning differences, it is likely that you have heard the phrase “Executive Functioning challenges” a fair amount – and while it may present images of your child wearing a business suit, it is quite different. We tend to associate the term Executive Function with someone in charge, but it is really more about how to utilize the part of the brain that helps a person be “in charge.” Often thought of as the CEO of the brain, executive function is a set of mental processes that directs or conducts a number of skills required in daily life, such as planning, decision-making, self-monitoring, and problem solving process. People with executive functioning disorders are not using their attention fully to get the job done.

To help parents and educators learn more about this subject, The Bridge Academy, an independent school for students with language-based learning disabilities, is hosting a community workshop featuring Dr. George McCloskey on the topic of “Executive Function – Bridging the Gap between Knowing and Doing.” The workshop will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 6:30 pm at 1958 Lawrenceville Road in Lawrenceville, NJ.

This presentation will describe executive functioning and discuss how executive function deficits and delays in development impact learning and production both in the classroom and at home. It will also include ways to recognize executive functions difficulties and how to help children with this difficulty improve their academic performance.

mccloskeyGeorge McCloskey, Ph.D., is a Professor and Director of School Psychology Research in the Psychology Department of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on the topic of executive functions and frequently presents on this topic at international, national, regional and state professional organization meetings.

Dr. McCloskey is the lead author of Assessment and Intervention for Executive Function Difficulties and Essentials of Executive Functions Assessment and is currently working on books for teachers, parents and students on the topic of executive functions.

The Bridge Academy is an independent school for students, ages 8 – 18, with language-based learning disabilities, like dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, ADHD, and dysgraphia.
