Delta variant source of local surge in COVID-19 cases

by Community Contributor

There have been 6 new cases of COVID-19 in Pennington Borough in the past two weeks. Half of the new cases are among children under the age of 18, following the recent pattern in the Hopewell Valley.

The more contagious Delta Variant is driving the surge in new cases.

“Getting your vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your friends, and your children,” said the Borough’s Health Officer Stephanie Carey.  “We know in the flood of information out there, that some people have concerns about vaccines. You can call the health department at 908-533-9331 to speak with a health professional. We will listen, and get answers to your questions.”

To get vaccinated, visit the New Jersey vaccine finder page or the Health Department vaccination page.

The Health Department will be offering a Pfizer Vaccine Clinic on Wednesday, August 25, 4-6PM for ages 12 and older, next to the Pennington Borough Library. Sign up at  Covid-19 Vaccination Clinic Dates (montgomery.nj.us)

All 21 counties in New Jersey have “high” or “substantial” rates of COVID-19 transmission and thus qualify for the CDC’s guidance for wearing masks when indoor public areas, both for vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Mercer County is in the “substantial” transmission category.

In addition, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy last week announced that face masks will be required for all students, teachers, and staff in New Jersey public schools as they reopen next month.

Mayor James Davy urges that “whether or not you are vaccinated, wear a mask when indoors with people who are not vaccinated, or whose vaccination status is unknown to you. Even vaccinated people can spread COVID-19, even as they are protected against a bad outcome. Working together, we can save lives.”

Hopewell Township has experienced a significant surge in cases over the past 2 weeks. The Health Department is reporting 30 new cases from July 30th through Friday, August 13th, with 20 of those cases occurring just last week. We are now seeing widespread community transmission among all age groups.

Please be safe and be smart. While we are seeing breakthrough cases among fully vaccinated residents, the vaccines remain our most effective tool to prevent hospitalizations & deaths. Immunocompromised residents who have received either Pfizer or Moderna may now be eligible for a booster dose. For more information, contact the Health Department at [email protected].
