Princeton: D&R Greenway Land Trust invites the public to don creature costumes for their annual Masquerade Ball. This at-home celebration of their 30th anniversary will be held at the Johnson Education Center, a circa-1900 barn, Saturday, October 26, from 6 to 10 p.m. Co-chairs James and Jess Fiorentino and Holly Welles and Rob Thomas will host this event in a heated tent under the stars. Guests are encouraged to come to this “paw-ty” as a favorite creature, or as themselves. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes and masks. A bountiful farm-to-table supper will be followed by cartooning with Patrick McDonnell, creator of the nationally syndicated cartoon, “Mutts”. Personal photos will be available through Nic’s Photo Show. Tickets are $150 per person; sponsorships available through Deb Kilmer, dkilmer@drgreenway.org or 609.924.4646, X 132. . Register by October 21 at www.drgreenway.org.

D&R Greenway (www.drgreenway.org), One Preservation Place, Princeton, NJ 08540. Masquerade Ball proceeds support the land trust’s preservation and stewardship mission, which protects habitat for creatures of all species, including humans.

President and CEO, Linda J. Mead reminds us that D&R Greenway has emerged as one of the most effective land conservation organizations in New Jersey, working to help preserve over 25,500 acres in this most populous state. She describes the idea to interact with “Mutts” creator, Patrick McDonnell, as a perfect fit. “Our achievements spoke to Patrick’s commitment to wildlife conservation.  What an honor to have him join us as he premiers his newest book, a 25th anniversary collection of his unique art, called ‘The Art of Nothing.’ Each of our guests will leave with a signed copy of the book…and, well, that’s a very special something!”

D&R Greenway Trustee James Fiorentino, one of the Masquerade Ball event co-chairs, adds, “Patrick McDonnell is a legend, especially in the world of cartooning and illustrating. He is loved for striking a delicate balance between lighthearted fun and responsible social commentary. Ever since I can remember, I have been a fan of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat. We learn so much about ourselves from the creatures around us!”

“When I first heard of the work of D&R Greenway from James Fiorentino, all I could say was ‘tell me more!’” said Patrick McDonnell. “When asked to participate on October 26th, my response was immediately enthusiastic. How can anyone turn down the opportunity to ‘paw-ty’ for preservation?”

D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST IS IN ITS 30TH YEAR of preserving and protecting natural lands, farmlands and open spaces throughout central and southern New Jersey. Through continuous preservation and stewardship — caring for land and easements to ensure they remain protected and ecologically healthy in perpetuity — D&R Greenway nurtures a healthier and more diverse environment for people and wild species in seven counties.

Accredited by the National Land Trust Accreditation Commission, D&R Greenway’s mission is to preserve and care for land and inspire a conservation ethic, now and for the future. Since its 1989 founding, D&R Greenway has permanently preserved more than 25,500 acres, (an area 20 times the size of New York City’s Central Park), including 33 miles of public trails.

The Johnson Education Center, a circa-1900 restored barn at One Preservation Place, Princeton, has been D&R Greenway’s home since 2006. Through nature-centric programs, art exhibits and related lectures by preservation leaders, D&R Greenway continually inspires greater public commitment to safeguarding land. In 2019, the Conservation Campus along Rosedale Road saw several achievements, including the opening of a Healing Trail with its own TravelStorys™ mobile app, the building of the “Iron Mike Trail” completed by the planting of 200 new trees, and the creation of a stone labyrinth.
