Hopewell UMC Hosts “The Redemption of Scrooge” – An Advent Journey

Dec 2, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

While the holiday season can be a season of joy for some, it can also be a season of struggle for others who experience the world as a dark and sad place. Sometimes we need a second chance to consider the underlying message of the holiday season.

This year, Hopewell United Methodist Church is taking a different look at the Christmas holiday and its meaning, through the lens of the classic story by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol.”

The book, “The Redemption of Scrooge,” written by pastor and author Matt Rawle, will be used as a guide. The author asks, “ Is redemption possible for Ebenezer Scrooge?” Rawle believes there is hope for old Ebenezer and he discovers the teachings of Jesus in the words of the Charles Dickens story. Rawle dives deep into the dark, sad, greedy world of Scrooge and discovers a man in dire need of a second chance. Along with Scrooge, Rawle presents the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future and in the process, he points out lessons about living with and for others in today’s world.

“Our journey through Advent and Christmas in the year 2018 is strikingly similar to that of Scrooge’s,” says Rev. Laura Steele, pastor of Hopewell UMC. “Our to-do lists are impossible to navigate, the pressure of getting everything right is too hard to carry, and all of the little details from family photos to Christmas gifts for teachers and coworkers and family members to Elf on the Shelf to Santa lists to staying up until 3 a.m. Christmas Eve putting toys with a thousand pieces together.

“It is safe to say our culture is caught up in the hoopla and sometimes we forget the real reason for celebration – the birth of Jesus. Join us as we journey through Advent with the coming of the Savior of the World as our guiding light.  Forget about the to-do lists for a while, come be restored and renewed – at the end of the day, that is the real story of Ebenezer Scrooge – a story of restoration and renewal. And, that is the story of the birth of Jesus – the coming of God in human form to restore and renew the world.” All are welcome to participate in any or all the activities planned!

The Hopewell Community Closet is also collecting educational toys to send along to a non-profit partner. See our website for details. https://bit.ly/2zOAENp

“The Redemption of Scrooge” is also our theme throughout the Advent season in both Sunday morning Bible Study and morning worship services, Dec. 2-23. We also have two special services planned – a Christmas Cantata on Dec. 16 and a Children’s Christmas Pageant on Dec. 23.

The Hopewell UMC’s Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) service at 5 p.m. will be inter-generational and family friendly. The candlelight service includes the Christmas story as well as the familiar Christmas hymns and songs.

Childcare is available on Sunday mornings and on Dec. 24.
