Davis. Cole. Eckstine. Hartman. What made their performances and recordings so legendary and loved by all? Who knows? But they certainly were something magical.
In That Old Black Magic, baritone showman, Keith Spencer, presents an entertaining, bluesy, and sentimental romp through some of the most-recognizable standards of the American Songbook brought to life by African-American greats, Nat “King” Cole, Sammy Davis, Jr., Billy Eckstine, and Johnny Hartman. You’ll hear songs such as “Route 66”, “Love Me or Leave Me”, “Lush Life”, “It’s Only a Paper Moon”, “Birth of the Blues”, and plenty more!
Keith is backed by a sizzling five-piece jazz ensemble featuring some of the most-talented instrumentalists in the region. Come and get enchanted by That Old Black Magic!

Outside the theatrical stage, Mr. Spencer has had the honor of singing concert stage backing vocals for artists such as Roberta Flack, Rosemary Clooney, and Sandi Patty. He appeared opposite Billboard Top 100 artist, Doreen Taylor, in An Enchanted Evening – A Night with Oscar Hammerstein II which debuted in Philadelphia to critically-rave reviews. Keith was also selected as featured concert soloist for Paul Robeson’s 120th Birthday Celebration hosted by the Paul Robeson House of Princeton.
Recently, Keith launched a trio of concerts focusing on the African-American experience:
- We Shall Not Be Moved – Songs & Speeches from the Civil Rights Movement
- The Robeson Songbook – A Negro Spiritual & Gospel Celebration of the Music of Paul Robeson, and
- Brothers on Broadway – A Celebration of Broadway’s African-American Leading Men
Performances have received rave reviews from audiences of every color and demographic. Keith had the opportunity to present selections from each concert on WRTI 90.1FM Philadelphia as part of their LIVE In-Studio Performance Series. Keith presented his one-person show, Brothers on Broadway – A Celebration of Broadway’s African-American Leading Men in partnership with the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey to record-breaking attendance at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton, NJ.
