Lichens Lecture with Sourland Conservancy
Sep 27, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm$5
Natalie Howe will tell us about the lichens that linger, often overlooked, on the tree bark, stones, and soils of the Sourlands. She will describe the small dramas of the lives of the lichens as they manage the algae, mosses, fungi, bacteria and animals that associate with them, pulling in her own stories about the joys and disappointments of her adventures in North American lichenology. Advance registration is required. www.tiny.cc/SCLichens
Natalie started studying lichens in 2006 while she was a student in the Master of Environmental Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. There, she documented the recovery of lichens at a restored zinc smelter site at the Lehigh Gap in Palmerton, PA. Since then, she has joined in on lichen forays across the east coast, collecting and identifying lichens in OH, PA, NY, MI, VA, GA, AL, NC, and of course, NJ. Most recently, she studied at Rutgers University where she earned a PhD in Ecology and Evolution. At Rutgers, she worked at the Pinelands Research Station, where she studied the soil lichens of the Pinelands and how they influence nutrient cycling and community dynamics in the soils beneath them. She is currently a Biological Scientist at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in Riverdale, MD.
