Rebel (2018) — This is a thrilling PBS documentary about Loreta Janeta Velazquez, an educated Cuban born teenager, who at the outset of the American Civil War fought as an officer in the battle of First Bull Run, was wounded at Shiloh, and served as a secret agent for the Confederacy. By 1863, Velazquez was spying for the Union. She chafed against the gender and race restrictions of her time, and her 1876 memoir, A Woman in Battle, caused a sensation.

The Legend: The Bessie Coleman Story (2018) — Bessie Coleman (1892 – 1926), a young woman who arose from the poverty of the Texas cotton fields, became the first African-American woman to earn a civil aviator’s license. She barnstormed around the country, thrilled audiences and inspired later generations. This is the story of her remarkable personality.
