Frontier Airlines Seeks New Lease with Trenton-Mercer Airport

by MercerMe Staff

As Frontier Airlines nears its 6-year anniversary with Mercer County’s Trenton-Mercer Airport, the airline seeks to enter into another 5-year lease with the county. The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders at their June 28 formal meeting adopted a resolution clearing the way for the air carrier to continue service between Trenton-Mercer and various destinations, according to Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes.

Under the terms, Frontier’s lease will be in effect until May 17, 2023. “Frontier Airlines executives continue to express their satisfaction in the Mercer County region’s support of their product and service,” said Mr. Hughes. In a market as competitive as the airline industry, Trenton-Mercer Airport is quickly becoming the first choice for leisure travelers, over the larger and more hectic mega airports,” the County Executive  added.

Frontier’s rent is $18,558 per year. In addition, the airline collects a Passenger Facility Charge from each ticket sold and passes a portion of that to the airport. Currently that amount is approximately $146,000 per month.

Denver-based Frontier (www.flyfrontier.com) first entered the Trenton-Mercer market in November 2012 with flights to Orlando, Fla. Today the airline offers service from Trenton-Mercer Airport to Charleston, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, Nashville, Minneapolis, Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, Detroit, Tampa, Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte and Atlanta. Some of those routes operate seasonally.

Mr. Hughes believes the airline’s reported success at Trenton-Mercer Airport is because Frontier’s low-cost airfare to desirable destinations is the “right fit” for the region, and data confirms that air travel is up at Trenton-Mercer over this time last year.  Figures show passenger enplanements up 17 percent in May 2018 compared to May 2017, from 32,819 to 38,485. The number of air carrier flights is also up slightly, from 399 to 441, a 10.5 percent increase for May 2018 compared to May 2017.

Located in Ewing, NJ, Trenton-Mercer Airport is easy to reach from major highways.

“With rapidly increasing passenger numbers in this region, we know consumers are clamoring for an alternative to metropolitan Philadelphia International and Newark-Liberty airports,” Hughes added. “Trenton-Mercer Airport is in a great location, just off of I-95, that’s easily accessible to anyone traveling for business or pleasure.”

Frontier recently announced additional hiring for their Trenton Flight Attendant base. To apply and learn more about the position visit FlyFrontier.com/careers.

Mercer County continues to make significant investments to Trenton-Mercer Airport.  Most recently, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) accepted Trenton-Mercer Airport’s updated Master Plan and approved its Airport Layout Plan (ALP) for airspace and design standards.

The County next will engage in a project scoping process with the FAA to agree on the program, which will include environmental approvals, for beginning the terminal design process. Other projects as shown on the new ALP may also be initiated in the coming months, including reconstruction of Taxiway F and design work for the Taxiway D and G connector.
