by MercerMe Staff

Update 3/16 2:51pm

An Executive Order announcing the closing of schools, workplaces, social gatherings. and restaurants was issued by the New Jersey Governor’s office this afternoon. The Executive Order does not address a curfew.

For full text of Executive Order, see this link.

The order calls for no gatherings of people more than 50, with some exclusions. All public, private, and parochial preschool, elementary, and secondary school are closed starting on Wednesday.  All higher education must cease in-person instruction starting on Wednesday.

The following establishments are closed: casinos, racetracks, gyms and fitness centers, entertainment centers, and other “non-essential” businesses.  To indicate what non-essential is, the inverse, essential is defined as grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, and healthcare facilities.  All restaurants may only offer takeout.

Earlier today:

NorthJersey.com is reporting that Governor Murphy, Governor Cuomo of New York, and Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced in a phone call this morning that they are imposing a strict curfew to try to combat the corona virus. The action comes in reaction to videos of millions of Americans continuing to congregate over the weekend despite Governors throughout the country pleading with residents to stay home and practice social distancing.

The Nj.gov website does not, as of 11:25 am on March 16, yet say anything about the curfew but it was reported here: https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/new-jersey/2020/03/16/nj-curfew-coronavirus-prompts-statewide-curfew-gov-murphy/5057576002/
