Greater Mercer TMA Recognizes Local Businesses for Leadership in Transportation Options

by Mary Galioto

Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association (GMTMA), the Regional Transportation Management Association for Mercer and Ocean counties, recognized 18 businesses as the 2015 “New Jersey Smart Workplaces” during GMTMA’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Princeton, on Friday, October 23rd.

The guest Speaker at the event was Darrin W. Anderson, Sr., Ph.D., Deputy Director, New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids and Associate Executive Director, New Jersey YMCA State Alliance. Dr. Anderson talked about the need to advocate for good community health and to increase access to safe public streets, sidewalks, good public transportation options, and to fresh fruits and vegetables.

On the same note, GMTMA Executive Director Cheryl Kastrenakes addressed the current state of the transportation system. “Our goal is to achieve a more balanced system, one that includes walking, biking and public transit as safe and realistic options,” Kastrenakes said.

Kastrenakes and GMTMA’s Board President, Jack Kanarek, honored the 2015 award winner businesses with the prestigious “New Jersey Smart Workplaces” (NJSW) award. The awards program is a partnership of the North Jersey Transportation Planning Association and GMTMA and recognizes employers for offering outstanding commuter services to their employees.

“GMTMA applauds these employers for providing programs that encourage more sustainable, environmentally-friendly commute options,” said Kastrenakes.

Kanarek remarked on “how impressive it is that so many awardees, even those at the Platinum level, continue to add more options for their employees.”  Electric vehicle charging stations, bike tool stations, and expanded shuttles were noted as examples.
