Hopewell appoints new Police Director

Hopewell Township is pleased to announce that Robert A. “Bob” Karmazin will be joining the Police Department as the new Police Director.

Karmazin recently retired as a Major General, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. He served as the USSOCOM senior representative to the Office of Secretary of Defense task force focusing on enhancing capabilities. His previous assignments at USSOCOM include Deputy Commanding General, Mobilization and Reserve Affairs and Director, J7/9 Joint Special Operations Force Development.

Karmazin started his military service in 1980 and was commissioned from Rider University’s ROTC Early Commissioning Program in 1982 as a Second Lieutenant. Upon commissioning, he remained in the United States Army Reserves continually for 40 years serving in command and director positions including multiple active duty tours and assignments overseas in support of the Special Operations Enterprise.     

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Rider University, a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies and Master’s Certificate in National Security Policy Planning from the United States Army War College, along with an Executive Certificate in AI/ML, MIT Sloan School of Management. He is a National Security Management Fellow, Maxwell School, Syracuse University and a CAPSTONE Fellow, National Defense University.

In his civilian capacity, Karmazin has 27 years of operational and investigative law enforcement experience. He retired in 2015 from the New Jersey State Police as a Captain/Bureau Chief assigned to the Special Operations Section. His assignments include New Jersey Regional Operations and Intelligence Center, Criminal Investigations Section, Division Staff and Field Operations Sections. He is a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy – 230th Session, and the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School.

Karmazin said he is looking forward to his new role with the Hopewell Township Police.

We will be what the community of Hopewell Township needs us to be as a police force, fostering open communication, transparency, always buoyed by a strong ethical and cultural foundation, which is essential to building trusted relationships.”

Julie Blake, on behalf of the entire Hopewell Township Committee, said “We are excited to welcome Bob Karmazin to Hopewell Township. The Township Committee selected the recently retired Major General from a strong pool of candidates. With his experience in the New Jersey State Police, Bob will be working with our police department and the community to increase and standardize community goals and communication. His experience working with diverse populations and listening to their needs is precisely what we are looking for in Hopewell Township.”

Karmazin currently resides with his wife in Mercer County, New Jersey and enjoys outdoor activities, skydiving and multiple restoration projects. His first day with the Township Police will be November 12, 2020.
