Hopewell Borough Passes Plastic Bag Ban and Talks Traffic Problems

by Madeline Ference

The Hopewell Borough Council adopted a plastic bag ordinance at the November 1 meeting, banning the distribution of plastic bags by commercial businesses in the Borough. The Council also heard from members of the public regarding concerns with speeding.

In October, the Council introduced Ordinance No. 826 (edited and revised from Ordinance No. 825) that states that there is to be a nine-month education period for residents and store owners, followed by a 60-day period before the ban is put into effect.

“I want to commend Council for working on this and coming up with something —  after discussion and public input — that is fairly comprehensive,” said Mayor Paul Anzano, at the November meeting. “We think that it’s an ordinance that will work well.”

Also, carried over from last meeting, the public expressed concern about speeding in the Borough, specifically on North Greenwood Avenue. The Council recognized the problem and informed the public that it has long-term plans to put in a crosswalk on North Greenwood from Hart Avenue in hopes to calm the speeding problem.

“We know the police are vigilant about watching the traffic,” said Anzano. “As a result of last meeting, I looked at the statistics and the police have written over 120 more tickets this year than they did last year over the same time-frame. I know a number of people who have gotten tickets on North Greenwood because they come down the hill and just fail to slow down.”

The Council also introduced Ordinance No. 827, which presents the $200,000 library roof repair. The Council will open the meeting to the public and take a vote at its next meeting on December 6 at 7pm.
