Hopewell Township Planning Board Apologizes to Environmental Commission

by Madeline Ference

The Hopewell Township Planning Board did not plan on facing scrutiny from the Environmental Commission at its December 13 meeting.

At its November meeting, the Board conducted extensive edits on the Township’s lighting ordinance, but accidentally forgot to pass it to the Environmental Commission for review and edits.

Ray Nichols, member of the Hopewell Township Environmental Commission, addressed the Board with his own suggestions, along with his concern regarding the Board’s lack of outreach to the Environmental Commission for help in editing the ordinance.

“It’s been fifteen years since the Environmental Commission spent a fair amount of time coming up with an ordinance to protect the night skies,” said Nichols. “I feel confident that I am speaking for other people who are concerned that the Planning Board has overlooked the Environmental Commission as a source of wisdom and advice.”

The Board recognized its mistake and reassured that they will work with the Environmental Commission more in the future to properly protect and preserve the Township’s environment.

“I wanted to formally apologize to you because that was an oversight on both mine and Rex’s part,” said Chairwoman Karen Murphy.

The Board ultimately approved amendments to the lighting ordinance at its meeting, which will be passed to the Hopewell Township Committee for further review.

The Board’s next meeting is scheduled for January 24, 2019 at 7pm.
