On Monday, June 12th at 7 pm, Hopewell Township’s Police Department will be making a presentation on the department’s current policies and practices when interacting with undocumented immigrants. The presentation will take place during the Hopewell Township Committee meeting at the Municipal Building at 201 Washington Crossing-Pennington Rd
The police will explain their role in relation to the Immigration and and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
Deputy Mayor Julie Blake asked the police to present after community members inquired about local police practice and current immigration law.
“Hopewell Township Police Department is not interested in any person’s immigration status,” Blake explained. “We encourage all residents to contact the police if they need our help. Police services are accessible to everyone, regardless of their immigration status, and there will not be questions on immigration status when a member of the public witnesses or is a victim of a crime. The police will continue, however, to enforce our laws against anyone who commits a crime, regardless of immigration status.”
