Longtime resident Betty Jean Smith passed away on April 13, 2021 at the age of 81. In her memory, the Hopewell Township Committee issued a proclamation on April 19 sharing that “her death has greatly grieved the people of the Township of Hopewell, Members of the Township Committee and all other Township Officials and Employees who knew her and respected her high sense of duty, integrity, advice, leadership and dedication to the Township of Hopewell.” The proclamation also applauded Betty Jean’s “invaluable and dedicated service to the entire Hopewell community.”

Betty Jean was born in Pennington and lived her entire life in Titusville where she served the Hopewell Township Police Department for nearly 40 years, She was the first police dispatcher, the first armed police matron and retired as the supervisor of the police records section of the Department.

In her free time, Betty Jean enjoyed going on cruises with her friends, according to the proclamation.

Betty Jean was the daughter of the late George F. and Evelyn Johns Branham, wife of the late Jack K. Smith Jr. She is survived by her daughter Cynthia L. Smith, her son and daughter-in-law Kevin B. Smith and Sandy Miller Smith, a brother, Lloyd Johns of Florida, a sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Jack Lippincott of New Egypt, NJ.

The proclamation will be signed by the mayor and will be presented to Betty Jean’s family as an expression of “the high esteem in which Betty Jean was held during her lifetime.”
