Lawrence Hopewell Trail launches art on the trail

by Community Contributor

Area artists inspired by the wildlife, trees, blossoms and grasses or lakes and streams along the 20-plus miles of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail (LHT) are invited to take part in the LHT Art on the Trail program.

The goal: create and share art inspired by the walking and biking trail that runs through Lawrence and Hopewell Townships.

The assignment: Take a walk along the trail with your cameras or art supplies, choose your subject matter by investigating the themes featured on the LHT photo gallery or tap into your own imagination to create drawings, paintings, videos and photos of scenes along the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. Submit them here, and the LHT will share the best of them on the lhtrail.org website, through social media and in future LHT publications.

A new theme will be featured every other month through next spring as follows:

  • June – July: Landscapes, which can be submitted any time but no later than July 31.
  • August – September: Flora and Fauna, such as a beautiful flower or bush or perhaps your favorite wild creature, submitted by September 30
  • October – November: Art inspired by waterways along the trail. Think Rosedale Lake, the D&R Canal, or a puddle on the trail after a rain shower. Submit by November 30
  • December – January: Still life of found objects from the trail (sticks, pinecones, a rock pile, etc.). Submit by November 30
  • February – March: Architecture along the trail. Maybe a bridge, a fence, a building? Submit by March 31

Artists can be of any age. There’s no cost to participate in the program. The LHT’s goal is to connect with others and celebrate our community.

An internal panel will select from among the newly created art works to spotlight each period. Each selected creator will receive publicity and visibility of their works via the LHT website. Brief descriptions of their efforts, which they are asked to submit when they share their artwork, will be offered as part of the publicity.

When submitting artworks via this link, artists will be asked to share a little about themselves and their creations, such as what medium they used (crayon, pencil, watercolor, oil, video, etc.), and to share links to their works or profiles of themselves if they wish.

This program is being announced in conjunction with the return of renowned area artist and landscape architect Jeffrey Charlesworth to the LHT. Last year, Charlesworth launched the “slow looking” arts program to encourage local artists to capture the beauty of nature on the trail. Check out this video of last year’s walk. Charlesworth will return with a second walk this July. Date and place to be announced.
