Lawrence Township Police Chief Mark Ubry presented the 2016 Annual Report to the Town Council on Tuesday evening. The following illustrates the highlights:
Vehicle crashes (Figure 1) increased from 1,314 in 2015 to 1,438 in 2016 (9% increase). The most common cause (30%) was from driver inattention (i.e. cell phone). In 2016, one person died resulting from injuries sustained during a motor vehicle crash, down from three fatalities in 2015 and four in 2014.
There were 17 robberies (Figure 2), 14 motor vehicle thefts (Figure 3), and 60 burglaries (Figure 4).
Out of 40 incidents where force was used (Figure 5) to subdue a person, it was noted that 37 were achieved using “physical” force (i.e.officer punches, kicks and/or uses compliance holds) and 3 incidents required “mechanical” force (i.e. oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray or baton).
Total crime numbers have stabilized over the past three years (Figure 6).
The Police Department answered 34,916 service calls (11% increase from 2015), 12,694 emergency 9-1-1 calls (19% decrease from 2015), and 995 abandoned emergency 9-1-1 calls (36% decrease from 2015). Abandoned emergency calls are also investigated.
