Letter to the Editor: Committed to Fight Against the PennEast Pipeline

by Community Contributor

Hopewell Township Citizens Against the PennEast Pipeline (HTCAPP) is committed to fight against the PennEast natural gas pipeline. We are aware that PennEast recently sent out notice letters to landowners along an alternative route.

What is the difference between PennEast’s original route and this alternative route ?

  • The original route is called a “greenfields” route: it is a completely new route that would clear cut and fragment miles of forest, expose our aquifers and streams to pollution, and devastate our treasured preserved open space, preserved farmlands, and public parks. Construction of a greenfields route will open the door to a superhighway web of pipelines through Hopewell.
  • The alternative route is a “co-located” route: it is located on an existing right of way already developed for the power grid. All the trees have been clear cut, all plant material removed, and the soil completely disturbed and compacted.

While PennEast’s alternative co-located route is less destructive and therefore “better” than PennEast’s original greenfields route, the fact is we do not want nor do we need this pipeline at all.

Both routes will pollute our air and water. Both routes create risks to our health and safety. Both routes violate people’s property rights. We will continue to fight against every PennEast proposal.

So many people have spoken out against PennEast’s plans, that our elected officials do not support this pipeline. We are heartened by the fact that we are not alone in this fight. We continue to stand strong alongside local, county and state representatives who are opposed to this pipeline.

HTCAPP is dedicated to helping anyone who received a notice letter from PennEast for any pipeline route. We’re here to help and have information and resources. If you have been contacted by PennEast, please email HTCAPP at [email protected] or through our website at www.HTCAPP.org. We are here to help and encourage anyone outraged by this project to join us in the fight against the PennEast Pipeline. No matter what route is proposed, our mission remains exactly the same – to protect Hopewell by stopping the PennEast pipeline.
