Lewis J. Korngut, Esq. Appointed Lawrence Municipal Court Judge

by Angela Jacobs

Lewis J. Korngut, Esq. was appointed Lawrence Township Municipal Court Judge at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Korngut replaces Kevin P. Nerwinski, Esq. who resigned the position in order to accept appointment as Township Manager.

Korngut has lived in Lawrence Township for 30 years and is the former Chief of the Mercer County Homicide Task Force, Chief of the Statewide Corruption Bureau of the Attorney General’s Office, and Supervisor at the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor’s Office. Additionally, Korngut was responsible for creating Mercer County’s Homicide Task Force and the Mercer County Child Advocacy Center. Most recently he was a member of the Kamensky, Cohen & Riechelson law firm as head of its Criminal and Municipal Defense, Corporate Investigations and White Collar practice.

After being sworn in by retired judge Charles Delehey, Mr. Korngut thanked Mr. Nerwinski for his service and said, “You are an amazing role model for me. I’ve had the opportunity to watch you in your role as Municipal Court Judge and I admire your excellence as a judge and as a person. Municipal Court is a funny place. It’s where some people have their only experience with the judicial system. People are very nervous when they come in and it has a big impact on them. You put everyone at ease. You’re such a good voice and presence for the township and we’re going to miss you in that role tremendously. I hope I’m half the judge that you’ve been for this town.”
