Local Boy Seeks Heart, Neighbors Have Love to Spare

by Mary Galioto

Robert Loftin, a 10-year old Hopewell Borough boy, needs a new heart.

Robert has been diagnosed with advanced heart failure, and his parents, Andrea and Michael, face the mounting costs of providing the best possible care for their son. In this critical time, their friends and neighbors in the greater Hopewell Valley area have rallied around the family to raise their spirits and to raise – just as importantly — money.

Early community efforts have included pop-up bake sales and an ongoing “GoFundMe” campaign. https://www.gofundme.com/f/Roberts-Heart-Story

Hopewell Borough resident and family friend Maria Gorbunova, along with other caring neighbors, are organizing a community book sale to support the Loftins. The group is now accepting donations of books, games, and puzzles at two drop-off locations: Hopewell Elementary School and Nomad Pizza in Hopewell Borough. They will also collect book donations this Saturday, September 21 at the Hopewell Harvest Fair — just look for the bins near the entrance to the cafeteria. The Community Book Sale will be held on Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the historic train station in Hopewell Borough on Railroad Place.

In another example of the community pitching in to help out, the Kids Can Tri triathlon hosted by We Care Special Sports at Schafer Sports Center, is called “Run for Robert” this year. Organizers have pledged to donate $10 for participant who signs up using promo code “TeamRobert,” up to a maximum match of $1,000. For more information about this event, please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2019-kids-can-tri-tickets-65579830037. The deadline for registration is Saturday, September 21.
