LTE: Jacquie Genovesi (Mom) for School Board

by Community Contributor

To the Editor:

When my mom asked me to write her a letter for the school board, I didn’t hesitate. Over the past three weeks alone I had asked several favors of her ranging from “can you read over my cover letter?” to “does this look like a spider bite to you?” I also ask her opinions on the best ways to achieve social change on my small college campus and how I could go about organizing a public forum here on campus. My passions for equality and my innate interest in social and environmental justice rest in the inspirations I draw from watching my mother. From her, I learned about the powers of advocating for myself, my peers, and my community at large. There is no better woman to serve our community on the school board.

Having three very different children, my mother has experience working through issues pertaining to learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health, and LGBTQ+. She has shown herself time and time again to be a driven member of our community. She is willing to fight for what is right and do what she thinks is best for every member of the Hopewell community, especially our amazing students. I remember when my mother wrote her dissertation. She would spend long hours at work in Philadelphia, and even longer hours reviewing budgets, strategic plans and writing her dissertation late into the night. On other nights she was helping to plan Bear Tavern’s Science Fair. All the while she was helping a 6th grader who was experiencing insomnia for the first time, me.

My mother is a scholar and curious by nature. She constantly teaches me new things about equity and justice. Not to mention cool things about the native wildlife, like how red-tail hawks are easy to identify by their russet tail feathers and banded chest. When it comes to policy implementation and budgets, I implore you to choose someone who is eager to create foundations based in fact and transparency. To choose someone like my mother who seeks to create healthy minds and bodies through policies that make students feel safe to be themselves within the learning environment. Policies that reignite students’ passions for learning, inclusion and community.

I admire my mother for many reasons. But perhaps her most endearing quality is her ability to love without bounds. Her love for this planet, for its creatures, for its peoples, all inspire me to seek a life of love and light and sustainability. She loves to learn. She loves to help people. Her selflessness is evident through not only her 30+ years working in the non-profit sector, but also in the tender ways she helps my siblings and I each and every day.

Goal-oriented, extensive experience in leadership and group dynamics, passionate, and a team player, I can think of no one better than my mother for the school board. She has the ability to create greater inclusivity and accessibility and to bring our community together.
