Lunch and Hummingbirds at Gravity Hill Farm with FoHVOS

by Mary Galioto

Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) is hosting a “lunch and learn” event on Saturday, April 25 at Gravity Hill Farm’s Community Center on Pleasant Valley Road in Titusville.

Local bird researcher, Tyler Christensen, will be providing a presentation about ruby-throated hummingbirds, the only hummingbird that regularly breeds east of the Mississippi. He will highlight the science of hummingbird behavior, migration, and other aspects of their biology. Also Christensen will discuss how to attract hummingbirds to your yard by selecting appropriate native flowering plants—just in time for their arrival from Central America and the onset of gardening season.

Christensen is a self-taught naturalist and ornithologist from Pennington and is the founder and co-director of the Nicoya Peninsula Avian Research Station in Costa Rica where he travels each winter to band and study tropical and migratory birds. He is Vice President and Education Chair of the Washington Crossing chapter of the National Audubon Society and is currently a student of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources at Rutgers University. Christensen is the subject of filmmaker Jared Flesher’s popular documentary Field Biologist.

Lunch, catered by The Brothers Moon, will be at 12:30 pm and the program will follow at 1:30. Homemade cookies and soft drinks will also be served.

The event takes place at the Community Center at Gravity Hill Farm, 67 Pleasant Valley Road in Titusville. Space is limited and preregistration is required. The cost is $15 per person, which will be collected at the door. To register, email [email protected] or phone 609-730-1560.
