March on Mother’s Day with Hope Rises Up

by Community Contributor

On Saturday, May 8 at 1pm, Hope Rises up is hosting a 5K walk in Pennington in support of the Black Mama’s Bail Out. The community is invited to gather and march together to mark the loss of countless lives and to stand unified in the assertion that BLACK LIVES MATTER.

“We demand equal protection under the law, and justice for victims and their families. We assert that we are done with deaths at the hands of white supremacists, and we demand that they, and those who will protect them, be held accountable,” states Hope Rises Up.

The beneficiaries of this event’s collective offering is  Black Mama’s Bail Out, an initiative of the National Bail Out. Black Mama’s Bail Out is a campaign to bail out “Black Mamas and caregivers from jails and migrant detention centers across the country every year before Mother’s Day, marking the first mass bail out action in contemporary times,” according to the initiatives website, which also clarified that the use of the word “mama” is meant to encompass all who identify in traditional and non-traditional ways.

The march’s organizers shared, “We are sourcing compassion and resources for the benefit of Mamas and the people they love who have been impacted by violence, tragedy, the disparities within our criminal justice system, and all manners of injustice.”

The 5K walk will start and end at the First Baptist Church at 5 Academy Ave. in Pennington, NJ. All marchers must wear a properly fitting mask. Signs with messages supporting the movement are welcomed. Please remember to bring your own reusable (and full!) water bottle to stay hydrated!

All marchers are encouraged to invite friends and family to sponsor their walk and help raise funds for the Bail Out. Marchers can also sponsor themselves. Use THIS FORM (optional) to keep track of your sponsors. If you are able, please get your pledges in EARLY, as we will send the initial payment to the bailout fund on Friday, May 7, in order to help Mamas to be bailed on Mother’s Day. The balance of the funds received will be sent on Wednesday, May 12  to help with future bailouts.
