Business, nonprofit and government leaders from across Mercer County gathered today at the Chauncey Conference Center on the campus of Education Testing Service for an update on the “State of Lawrence Township” form Mayor David Maffei.
Organized by the MIDJersey Chamber of Commerce, the luncheon allowed the Mayor to thank various sectors of the community for their service and highlight the latest happenings in the Township. Calling Lawrence “small but mighty,” Maffei recalled growing up in the Township and the area’s vision for the future. He commended the town’s administrator Richard S. Krawczun and the rest of Council for approving a budget with the largest surplus in 11 years and the third year in a row of no municipal tax increases.
The Mayor welcomed the long awaited start of a State highway construction project on Business Route 1 that will soon provide a large median and on-street parking, as well as a traffic calming circle at Whitehead Road. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
Commending the public works department’s efforts, Maffei highlighted the abundant open space in the area, the recent successful national Special Olympics games, the Township’s senior center and a new initiative at QuakerBridge Mall that is bringing art from the nearby Grounds for Sculpture to Lawrence. The Mayor thanked the Township’s volunteer fire fighters who answered 1990 calls in 2015, EMTs for their service and police for keeping crime down across the board in Lawrence.
“My heart will always belong in Lawrence,” concluded Maffei, “I love my job.”
