Medical Marijuana Policy Approved at LTPS

by Angela Jacobs

The Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS) Board of Education approved an “Administration of Medical Marijuana” (5330.01 and R5330.01) policy on July 27th. All New Jersey schools and facilities serving students with developmental disabilities are required to have such a policy per a bill signed into law last November by Governor Chris Christie.

The LTPS policy authorizes primary caregivers to administer medical marijuana to a qualifying student patient while on school grounds, aboard a school bus, or attending a school-sponsored event.

The policy details the following:

  • The primary caregiver must meet the criminal history record background check requirement.
  • The primary caregiver must be authorized to administer medical marijuana to the qualifying student patient.
  • The enrolled student must be authorized to engage in the medical use of marijuana.
  • The student and primary caregiver must obtain a Registry Identification Card from the New Jersey Department of Health.
  • The primary caregiver must submit a written request, with supporting documentation, to the Principal requesting approval to have a primary caregiver assist in the administration of medical marijuana to the student while on school grounds, aboard a school bus, or attending a school-sponsored event.

Parents of children who combat a variety of medical issues with doctor-prescribed marijuana celebrate such policies but hope that school nurses will one day be able to administer the drug.

Andrew Zuckerman, LTPS Director of Instructional Services, said that he is unaware of any students in the district who need medical marijuana to manage their symptoms at the present time.
