Mercer County Declared Eligible for FEMA Assistance for Winter Storm Cleanup

by Mary Galioto

President Barack Obama has declared Mercer County one of 17 New Jersey counties eligible for federal disaster aid to supplement recovery efforts from a winter storm in January.

The announcement means the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will reimburse County and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations up to 75 percent of eligible storm-related costs they incurred while responding to the blizzard that struck the area Jan. 22-24, dumping almost 2 feet of snow in Mercer County.

Mercer County’s Office of Emergency Management will now coordinate meetings between FEMA and municipalities and other agencies that may be eligible for aid. Individual residents are not eligible for aid.

“We always aggressively pursue eligibility for federal assistance after any major storm,” said County Executive Brian M. Hughes. “I’m grateful that President Obama recognized Mercer County was among the counties that were hit hard by the January blizzard.”

In the weeks following the storm, the County administration and the County Office of Emergency Management worked closely with all 12 Mercer municipalities to assess and compile snow removal and other storm-related costs Countywide, and submitted those findings to the State. The County will assist them in filing with FEMA to be reimbursed, Mr. Hughes said.
