Mercer County Master Gardeners to Hold Annual Insect Fest

by MercerMe Staff

Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County will sponsor the 2019 Insect Festival on Saturday, September 14, at Mercer Educational Gardens, 431A Federal City Road, Hopewell Township. The festival will be held from 11am to 2pm, rain or shine. Admission is free, and on site parking is available. Learn about the importance of insects in our lives through fun, hands-on activities!

This year’s festival, themed “Remember Bugs,” will feature educational activities for visitors of all ages, including the popular puppet show, scavenger hunt and metamorphosis game. Other highlights include “Bugs in Water,” “Insect Olympics” and Q&A with the Mercer County Horticulturist. New this year will be a display of carnivorous plants. Local environmental agencies and experts will offer displays and information to the public including representatives from the Watershed Institute, Mercer County Mosquito Control Commission, NJ Beekeepers Association and the NJ Department of Agriculture, as well as the Rutgers Ecology Winfree Lab and the Mercer County Naturalist.

Attendees are invited to view the seven demonstration gardens on site, and catch and release insects in the restored native meadow. Along the way, there will be activities designed to teach children of all ages to appreciate the incredible insects common to the Northeast.

The Master Gardeners of Mercer County is a volunteer educational outreach program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Master Gardeners volunteer throughout the County and answer home horticulture questions through the Rutgers Master Gardener Helpline, (609) 989-6853, Monday through Friday, 10am to 2pm.
