After the previous two games where the HVCHS varsity football team came up short, the team was happy to be back in the winning column last week with a 50-6 win against a very young Princeton team. When Princeton scored late in the game, both sides cheered them on. The Hopewell coaches expressed their pride in the players, not only for their actions on the field but also how they conducted themselves in the lopsided victory. The Bulldogs next game is Friday, November 1 at Hightstown. -David Caldwell
HVCHS boys’ soccer went 2-1 last week, beating Asbury Park and Robbinsville, but losing to Princeton. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs defeated Asbury Park 6-2 with goals from CJ Colt, Zach Crow, Kyle Mason, Ryan Milano, and two by Christian Poehlein. On Wednesday, Hopewell faced Robbinsville, who had beaten the Bulldogs earlier in the season. This time Hopewell came out on top, winning 2-0 with goals from Christian Poehlein and Nick Tagliarini. On Friday, Hopewell took a tough loss against Princeton, falling 4-0. Next week the State tournament starts on Tuesday for Hopewell against Ocean Township. -Christopher Sawicki
The HVCHS girls’ varsity volleyball team finished their season playing Princeton in the semi-finals of the BCSL tournament. Unfortunately, the team lost in two sets, 23-25 and 13-25. This loss eliminated them from the tournament and finished their season with a record of 8 wins and 13 losses. Congratulations to graduating seniors Kelly Cane, Hae Won Han, Anastasia Sotos, Jacquelene Wulf, and Kayleigh Crow. -Emilie Sawicki
Tuesday ended the HVCHS field hockey season in the State tournament game against Holmdel. It was a well fought game but the girls ultimately fell short of the win. The end result was a one goal difference with a final score of 4-3. Goals came from Bella DiNardo(2) with an assist from Chloe Mcgregor. Sofia Zangrilli and Sophia Wittenborn held down the defensive end, keeping it a close game. Most players will be returning next year. -Bella DiNardo
The HVCHS girls’ tennis team finished their season with three difficult matches against Allentown, Stuart, and West Windsor Plainsboro North. They lost their match against Allentown 1-4, but many of the matches were close. Olivia Lundquist, Hopewell’s third singles player, had a particularly exciting match. She won the first set 7-5, lost the second set 6-7 with a 6-8 tie breaker, and ultimately lost her match in a third set tie breaker. The first doubles team, Hope Zheng and Nerissa Lundquist, had a notable performance and won 6-0 6-2, getting Hopewell their only win of the match. Hopewell did better on Wednesday with a 5-0 win against Stuart Country Day School. The team lost to one of the best teams in the area, West Windsor Plainsboro North, 0-5 on Thursday. Overall, Hopewell girls’ tennis had a very good season. They had 10 wins and 10 losses. The team defeated some of their hardest competition and ended as division champions. -Paz Baum
The boys’ and girls’ HVCHS cross country teams finished 7th at the Mercer County championship meet this past Friday. Next up is the Group 3 State sectional championship meet on Saturday November 9 at Thompson Park. -Aaron Oldfield
In Hopewell Valley Soccer Association D2 boys news, the Carnegie Cat Clinic won their game against Soccer Post Saturday. Taegan Levy played goalie in the first half, stopping the other team from scoring a number of times. In the second quarter, Bodhi Brown scored the first goal, bringing the score to 1-0 at half. In the second half, Liam Mazur, Bodhi Brown, Nathan Blunt, and Jackson Mooney ran the ball up the field playing great midfield and offense. Robert Litz played great defense to protect the goal. Bodhi Brown saved a goal off a penalty shot, kicking the ball up for Julian Blunt who scored the Cats’ second goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-0. -Caitlin Mazur
