In their game against Princeton, the Hopewell girls put up a tough fight despite losing both sets, 22-25 and 15-25. However, they played a good game with notable kills and blocks by Faith Dunham and a few aces from Sofie Ragins. In their second game of the week they lost to Notre Dame in two sets, both with a score of 17-25. The Hopewell Valley CHS girls’ tennis team has had a successful two weeks at both the Mercer County Tournament and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), the state tournament. The first singles, third singles, and second doubles made it to the second day of the Mercer County Tournament last Wednesday in the backdraw tournament. Hopewell Valley ended the tournament as eighth out of 19 schools.

For the NJSIAA tournament, Hopewell is seed six in Group Two Central Jersey. Their first match for the state tournament was on Friday against 11th seed Pemberton. Hopewell won 5-0. Their next state match is on Tuesday against Holmedale, which is seed three.

Hopewell is on their way to being champions of the Group Two Patriot Division as they have in many past years. To date, they have beaten Robbinsville 3-2, Ewing 5-0, and Hamilton 5-0. Second doubles had a close match but lost against Robbsinsville in an 8-10 set tie break. The team lost against Hightstown High School on Wednesday. They will play Steinert, Nottingham, Lawrence High School, and Allentown in the next two weeks. Hopewell is favored against Steinert and Nottingham, but the matches against Lawrence and Allentown are toss-ups. -Paz Baum
