Monday Sports Roundup

The Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) Boys swim team competed in the Mercer Country Tournament held at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North last week, placing 7th overall. In the 200 Medley Relay, Alessio Paoloni, Matt Immordino, Alex Helmrich and Christopher Sawicki placed 7th (1:59.27).  In the 200 free, Alessio Paoloni placed 3rd (1:59.24), Alex Helmrich 14th (2:10.88), Hayden Geurds 23rd (2:16.24) and Anthony Azara 34th (2:27.14).  In the 200 IM, Michael Genovesi finished 28th (2:47.62) and Thomas Montanari 30th (2:49.11).  In the 50 free, Christopher Sawicki placed 15th (26.76), John Raskin 27th (28.30) and James Long 43rd (30.60). 

In the 100 fly, Alessio Paoloni placed 4th (1:01.54), Thomas Montanari 28th (1:15.68) and Lucas Henderson 39th (1:44.43).  In the 100 free, Heyden Geurds finished 17th (1:00.44), Owen Seibold 21st (1:02.13), John Raskin 27th (1:04.26) and Michael Genovesi 32nd (1:05.61).  In the 400 free, Matt Immordino placed 8th (4:37.15), Alex Helmrich 11th (4:44.75) and Pavel Sverdlov 35th (5:49.94).

In the 200 free relay, the team of Hayden Geurds, Michael Genovesi, John Raskin and Owen Seibold placed 8th overall with a time of 1:49.92.  In the 100 back, Christopher Sawicki finished 9th (1:07.69), Anthony Azara 20th (1:13.29) and Pavel Sverdlov 30th (1:21.37).  In the 100 breaststroke, Matt Immordino placed 16th (1:17.02), Owen Seibold 26th (1:21.80) and Armaan Desai 41st (1:32.75).  In the 400 free relay, Alessio Paoloni, Hayden Geurds, Christopher Sawicki, and Alex Helmrich swam a tough race, finishing 4th with a time of 3:50.79. 

Additionally, Alessio Paoloni qualified for the Meet of Champions, and the Hopewell Valley Boys will be competing in the first round of States on Friday at Holmdel. -Emilie Sawicki

The CHS girls swim team came in 7th place as well in the Mercer County Tournament. Regan Sherman made finals for two events, winning 4th place in the 200 freestyle (2:14.26) and 3rd in the 400 freestyle (4:37.78). Sion Shambora and Olivia Doherty also placed 27th (2:39.85) and 36th (2:54.33) in the 200 free respectively, while Nicole Bartnikowski finished 33rd (6:08.69) in the 400 free.

Lilly Wurtz and Ava D’Alessandro both made finals in the 50 freestyle, with Wurtz taking 5th place (28.97) and D’Alessandro 11th (30.11). Jade Gamelin-Kao also finished 17th (30.92) and Reilly Kurtz finished 42nd (37.56). Lilly Wurtz also swam in the 100 backstroke finals, placing 12th (1:17.23), with Olivia Doherty (43rd, 1:38.64), Reilly Kurtz (45th, 1:40.91) and Nicole Bartnikowski (46th, 1:42.55) also swimming the event.

Shriya Karthikvatsan made the 100 freestyle final, finishing in 9th place (1:05.45). Ava D’Alessandro finished 18th (1:08.59), Jade Gamelin-Kao 23rd (1:10.11) and Sion Shambora 26th (1:11.78) in the event. Sofia Marcus placed 34th in the 100 fly (1:40.01).

Emilie Sawicki and Shriya Karthikvatsan both made the 100 breaststroke finals, with Sawicki taking 5th place (1:19.21) and Karthikvatsan taking 9th (1:20.81). Alyssa Liu placed 21st (1:30.28) and Natalie Hayward 26th (1:33.79) in the event. In the 200 individual medley, Emilie Sawicki took 20th (2:46.33), Alyssa Liu 26th (2:56.15), Natalie Hayward 32nd (3:07.62) and Sofia Marcus 42nd (3:29.84).

The Bulldogs placed 8th in the 200 medley relay (Regan Sherman, Emilie Sawicki, Ava D’Alessandro, Shriya Karthikvatsan, 2:12.81), 8th in the 200 freestyle relay (Lilly Wurtz, Alyssa Liu, Sion Shambora, Jade Gamelin-Kao, 2:02.56), and 6th in the 400 freestyle relay (Ava D’Alessandro, Shriya Karthikvatsan, Emilie Sawicki, Regan Sherman, 4:30.08).

Additionally, Regan Sherman qualified for the Meet of Champions as a result of her strong performance at MCTs. The Hopewell Valley girls’ next meet is Tuesday against Metuchen in their first States meet. -Christopher Sawicki

On Tuesday, the Lawrence Cardinals hosted the CHS girls basketball team. CHS spoiled the visit with a 51-30 victory. The Bulldogs were led by Ally Oldfield (11 pts) and Charlotte Hare (10 pts). Maddie Schrader hauled down 9 rebounds.

Friday was Senior night at CHS for the girls team as they hosted CVC leading Notre Dame. Addy Danieuk, Charlotte Hare, Ally Oldfield, Molly Martin and Maddie Schrader were honored.  Notre Dame is undefeated in the conference at 10-0. The Bulldogs gave the Irish all they could handle with a 35-32 overtime loss. Erika Porter lead Notre Dame with 16 points in victory. Franki Gomez led all scorers with 20 points. Charlotte Hare chipped in with 8 points and 7 rebounds. -Paul Dombosky

The CHS boys basketball team hosted Lawrence last Tuesday. Despite Kevin Ellis’ leading the Bulldogs with 10 points, the fell to the Cardinals 52-39. Friday night, the Bulldogs visited Notre Dame, who came out on top with a 51-44 win.  Jason Weber (15 points) and Quentin Autry (14 points) paced the Irish.  John Broz and Kevin O’Reilly scored 17 points each to lead the Bulldogs. 

Saturday afternoon brought the Pennsauken Indians to CHS. With 5 players scoring in double digits and a multitude of 3 pointers, Pennsauken scored a 75-56 win. Kevin O’Reilly (21 points) and John Broz (16 points) led the Bulldogs. -Paul Dombosky

It was a good night for the CHS indoor track team on Thursday as they competed at Jadwin Gym against Princeton, Lawrenceville, Lawrence, Hun, Hillsborough and Pennington. Elliot Bangerter won the boy 1600 while Sofia Venezia won the girls 1600. Estelle Coret won the 55 meter dash and took 2nd in the 200. Madeline Castadot won the high jump and the 4×400 team of Kristen McDonough, Chloe McGregor, Elizebeth Hill and Anita Babu took top honors. Kahlia Fletcher-Howard was third in both the 55 meter high hurdles and the 200.

The Hopewell Valley/Montgomery Bulldogs ice hockey team had a strong week, with one tie and two wins. On Tuesday, they played hard against Paul VI High School, but neither team was able to score, ending in a 0-0 tie. On Wednesday, they played Lacey High School. The game was called after the second period, with Hopewell Valley/Montgomery winning 10-0. In the first period, goals were scored by  Dan Seamon (assisted by Joe Greenspoon and Michael Paster),

Jackson Cook (assisted by Ethan Block and Adrien Mann), Ethan Block (assisted by Adrien Mann and Jackson Cook), Adrien Mann (assisted by Ethan Block), Billy Ruger (assisted by Sean Amon and Bobby Ruger), Andrew Seamon (assisted by Jackson Brennan and Michael Boyer) and Michael Paster (assisted by Sean Amon and Lindsey Anderson). In the second period, Adrien Mann (assisted by Ethan Block), Michael Paster (assisted by Billy Ruger and Andrew Seamon), and Max Hayden (assisted by Andrew Seamon and Jackson Brennan) scored.

On Friday, the Bulldogs travelled to Voorhees for a rematch with Paul VI.  This time, however, there was a far different result. The Bulldogs Roman Vitolo (assisted by Lucas Gaissert and Sean Amon) scored first.   In the second period, Hopewell Valley’s Sean Amon (assisted by Dan Seamon) and Jack Paolini scored.  Sean Amon, assisted first by Michael Boyer and Lucas Gaissert and then unassisted, made it a hat trick in the third.  The 4-1 win over Paul VI lifts the Bulldogs’ overall record to 12-5-2. Their next game against Steinert is also Senior night, honoring the 5 graduating seniors. -Tracy Vogler
