Hopewell Valley Central High School

Soccer

Wednesday night, Notre Dame came to Hopewell Valley. Coming into the game, Hopewell Valley was undefeated and unscored upon. At the end of the game, Notre Dame came away with a 1-0 win. Notre Dame’s Hannah Smith got the goal with an off-angle shot that got past Hopewell goalie Lucy Fleming. Notre Dame’s goalies Olivia Bodmer and Nicole Rende each saved 6 shots to combine for the shut out.

Field Hockey

The Hopewell Valley Field Hockey team played two hard games this week against Notre Dame and Allentown, both of which went into overtime. Bella DiNardo scored in the Notre Dame game, along with the midfield and defense having strong carries up the field. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play, but sadly the team lost in overtime 2-1. During the Allentown game Hopewell got on the scoreboard early with a goal from Bella DiNardo in the first three minutes. Hopewell fought hard with great work on the defensive end by Anna Gabe, Sofia Zangrilli, Sheila Garrity, and Sophia Wittenborn. Mariel Haynes came up huge for the Bulldogs with 18 saves. DiNardo was able to score again with an assist from Caroline Colavita. The game ended 2-2 in overtime with a tie. Next week the Bulldogs look to play Nottingham at home.

Cross-Country

The Hopewell Valley boys and girls cross country teams had another strong week, defeating Allentown by the identical score of 24-35 to bring both teams’ records to 5-0. Paige Dumont won the girls race and was followed by Sofia Venezia (3rd overall), Dorothy Wong (5th overall), Katie Rowe (7th overall), Mia Vaughn (8th overall) and Liz Chandler (9th overall).

The boys were led by Cormac Dow (2nd overall), Adam Golian (4th overall), Arthur Kim (5th overall), Ben Angwenyi 7th (overall), Ben Veale (8th overall) and Matt Tunkel (9th overall).

Tennis

The Hopewell Valley girls tennis team lost 0.5-4.5 against Hightstown on Monday. Third singles player Olivia Lundquist’s match came to a draw at 6-6 in the second set after she won the first set 6-3. Second singles player Jacky Sun also had a very close match. After losing the first set 3-6, she came back 6-3 in the second set but lost the super tie breaker 6-10.

The team had a great 5-0 win against Steinert the next day. Almost every player won their match 6-0, 6-0. The third match of the week, against Lawrence, ended in a 1-4 loss.

Hopewell Valley girls tennis has earned third seed in the state tournament. The first game will be against sixth seed Somerville in the quarter final. If they win, they will likely play Robbinsville, to whom they lost in a very close 2-3 match earlier in the season. If they win again, they will likely play Lawrence in the final at the end of the week

Football

Friday night, Steinert paid a visit to Hopewell Valley and left with a 32-18 win. The teams traded first half touchdowns, but Hopewell could not make the 2-point conversions and went into halftime down 14-12. In the second half, Steinert pulled away with two more touchdowns before Hopewell Valley’s Tim McKeown found the endzone with a 1-yard run. Steinert added a fourth quarter field goal.

Girls Division 3

Pixie Salon v. m3. On Saturday, 10/24, HVSA Division 3 Girls team Pixie Salon scored 2 goals to defeat m3 Studios.  Angelyn Li scored one goal and m3 Studios put the ball in their own net, while Samantha Weeast had a shut out game in goal. On Sunday, 10/25, Pixie Salon won 2-1.  Goals were scored by Angelyn Li and Daphne Edmond-Marietti. Maggie Woodside, Sophia Acerenza, Lola Caruso, Alexandra Rowe, and Ainsley Weed dominated in defense, while Luca Burd, Aarya Joshi, Andrea Odaa, Siria Vallucci, and Kaylie Weeast assisted with offense.

Girls Division 4

Hopewell v. Hamilton. Hopewell’s Jack’s Nursery traveled to Hamilton Friday night, defeating the Devils in a rematch, 5 – 0. The first half had Hamilton’s offense attacking often, only to be turned back by the Jack’s unrelenting defense comprised of Hailey Addonizio, Bella Gaglio, and Charlotte Catlett, with Chelsea Kent making brilliant saves in goal. Going into halftime with both teams scoreless, Jack’s Nursery opened the second half when Lilly Gaglia passed the ball to Sierra Mitchell, where she hit a 25-yard, dead center shot over the Hamilton keeper’s hands for the first score. Nearly five minutes later, Evy Lansing’s corner kick was perfectly placed in front of the goal where Sonia Tenbarge powered in the first of her two goals. Her second goal was from deep on the left side, where she was able to bend it around the post. Amanda Flanders got on the scoreboard with an assist from Carly Brant. Ayla Mauk, as the final minute was ticking away, broke free and took the ball down the right side of the goal, drilling a nice angel shot which avoided the keeper, hitting the post to go in for the final score.
