Saturday morning, Ewing took on Hopewell Valley at Ackerson Field in Hopewell. The Halloween game was a nightmare for Ewing as Hopewell Valley cruised to a 6-0 victory. Hopewell got two goals each from Emily DeNero and Nicola Mosionek. Sarah Yancey and Evanna Hementez contributed a goal each. Lucy Fleming got the shutout in goal.
Cheerleading
Cheerleading is a team that, unfortunately due to COVID-19, doesn’t have competition this fall. But this group are athletes who train hard and brought spirit to every football game. Let’s give a shout out to those who shout out!
Football
Hopewell Valley traveled to Notre Dame this week to meet a strong Fighting Irish team. Led by Ricky “Pop” Spruil’s 4 touchdowns, Notre Dame won 37-12. Hopewell Valley’s touchdowns resulted from a 62-yard reception by Timmy McKeown to Devin Higgins and a 71- yard pick six by Jarrett Sharp.
Field Hockey
The Hopewell field hockey team had a game against Nottingham this week. The Bulldogs worked hard to come out with the win. Scoring most of our goals in the first quarter, DiNardo had four with McGregor and Kurtz each tallying one with Howard-Fletcher and McGregor each having an assist. The Bulldogs held on to possession for a majority of the game, in order to have a shutout against Nottingham, but Haynes still tallied four saves in goal. Next week the Bulldogs will close out their regular season with games against Hightstown and Lawrence.
Girls tennis
The Hopewell Valley girls tennis team excelled in the state tournament this week. Normally under New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association rules, there is a champion for each of the four groups in the state. This year they combined groups 1, 2, and 3. Through the season, the team earned third seed in this larger group of teams.
Hopewell Valley started out strong with a 5-0 win against Somerville on Tuesday. They won again against Robbinsville 3-2 in the semifinal on Friday. Earlier in the season, they had lost against the same team 2-3. Jacky Sun, the second singles player, flipped the score–she lost 3-6 0-6 at the first match a few weeks ago but won 6-1 6-0 this week. The team unfortunately lost 1-4 against Lawrence High School in the final; this is the same score as the match against Lawrence they played earlier in the season. Overall, Hopewell had a great season with 9 wins and only 5 losses.

Division 4 Girls
Hopewell’s Jack’s Nursery v. Hamilton Reds. Hopewell met Hamilton Tuesday night, winning 5-0, continuing their undefeated ways, and giving Chelsea Kent her eighth clean sheet of the season. The scoring attack was led by Hopewell’s offense consisting of Ayla Mauk, Evy Lansing, Jaina Jackowski, and Sierra Mitchell, crossing the ball from side to side, generating scores by Carly Brant and Amanda Flanders in the first half. Second half scoring started off when Lilly Gaglia, after receiving a pass from the right side, used tremendous footwork to move the ball around defenders in the box, and drove it hard into the upper left corner. Sonia Tenbarge scored from the right side, near the top of the box, and Carly B. put in her second goal of the game with only a few minutes left.
Jack’s Nursery v. Hamilton Phantoms. Hopewell’s second game of the week had Jack’s Nursery take on the Hamilton Phantom’s in a rain-drenched game Sunday afternoon, walking away with a 5-2 win. This game saw first half scores by Carly B. with the assist from Sierra M., Megan MacDonald driving one in from the left side, and Amanda F. scoring off a pass from Lilly G. Hamilton Phantom’s came back in the second half, cutting the lead to 1, off a penalty shot and then a nice shot to the bottom right corner. The game could have been tied, had it not been for Chelsea Kent’s save of another penalty kick. As the game tightened, Jack’s defense answered the call, with Hailey Addonizio, Charlotte Catlett, Bella Gaglia, Lily Panzitta and Piper Brant holding strong to allow the offense make their push, ending the second half with scores by Megan M. off a beautifully placed cross from Ayla M., and Amanda F. scoring the final goal.
Division 2 Girls
Fyrefly Yoga v. Greenleaf Landscaping. On Saturday, October 17, team Fyrefly Yoga won a hard fought game against team Greenleaf Landscaping, 5-4. The victory for the Fyreflies was delivered through the amazing hustle of the midfielders. Both Sasha Heimann and Kylie Ewert worked throughout the game to carry the team to victory. Five early goals for the Fyreflies were chipped away at by team Greenleaf. For team Greenleaf, Brianna Stylianou scored an exciting penalty kick! Catelyn Fox, Cate Batcha, and Marni Flanagan also scored. Emilia Batcha made several impressive saves to keep the game tight. Great Game!!
Hopewell Express v. Clarke Insurance. Also on Saturday, team Hopewell Express played Clarke Insurance and gained a hard fought 2 to 1 victory. Ashley Kurian got the Empress on the board with a goal in the first half to give the Express a 1 – 0 lead at the half. Morgan Upson would increase the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the fourth. A late fourth quarter goal by Clarke Insurance made it a one goal game but great defense by the Express would secure the 2-1 victory.
Hopewell Express v. Fyrefly Yoga. On Sunday, October 18, team Hopewell Express battled team Fyrefly Yoga to a 1-1 tie. With the game tied at zero in the fourth quarter, Sloan Ritter got a break away and put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Express lead. Fyrefly tied the game late in fourth and the game ended tied 1-1. Reese Bourne, Natalie Frush, Eva Dominico, Lauren Dwyer, Emma Luciano, and Ashley Kurian led the defensive effort for the Express. For team Fyrefly Yoga, amazing hustle by the entire team secured the 1-1 tie. Theresa Fox’s fourth quarter goal was remarkable and Sophia Prunetti had an amazing day in the goal with several spectacular saves that kept the Fyrefies in the game. The team continues to grow as a unit and gets better every game.
Hopewell Express v. Greenleaf Landscaping. On Saturday, October 24, Hopewell Express played Greenleaf Landscaping in a down to the wire game. Hopewell Express got off to a fast start on a goal by Eva DeMinico and 2 by Morgan Upson. Greenleaf made a furious comeback scoring two quick goals to pull to with 3-2. Great defense by Reese Bourne, Sloan Ritter, Natalie Frush, Brigid Falk, Ashley Kurian, Emma Luciano and Kayal Kasi secured the 3–2 victory for Hopewell Express.
Fyrefly Yoga v. Clarke Insurance. In a highly entertaining game, also on October 24, Fyrefly Yoga defeated Clarke Insurance 3-2. Firefly Yoga went down 2-0 early in the first quarter when Samantha Parsons and Celia Carsky-Wilson scored for Clarke Insurance. Three goals were scored in the second quarter by Firefly Yoga. In the second half, both teams were fantastic on offense and defense, putting on an unforgettable soccer feast for both teams’ spectators. Clarke Insurance’s attacking players, especially June Branham and Kate Krupa, were instrumental in creating so many chances during the last quarter, but were unable to score to tie the game. For the Fyreflies, the day was carried by the mid field crew of Theresa Fox, Sasha Heimann, and Kylie Ewert. Hustle is the only word to describe the efforts of team Fyrefly.
Hopewell Express v. Clark Insurance. On Sunday, October 25, Hopewell Express played to a thrilling 1–1 tie with Clarke Insurance. Lauren Dwyer scored the lone goal for Hopewell Express on a penalty kick in the third quarter. Ashley Kurian, Kayal Kasi, Sloan Ritter, and Natalie Frush kept the game tied at 1-1 with great goaltending. Both teams battled hard, neither deserving to lose. Clarke Insurance supporters watched Ava Berg score a very fancy goal with an unstoppable blast shot. Clarke Insurance made a couple substitutions at the start of the last quarter. The fresh legs reignited the intensity of the Clarke Insurance attacks, especially Celia Carsky-Wilson came very close to giving Clarke Insurance the lead with a strong shot from outside the opponent’s 18-yard box, but her chance went just over the crossbar.
Fyrefly Yoga v. Greenleaf Landscaping. Also on Sunday, team Fyrefly Yoga defeated team Greenleaf Landscaping 3-0. Both Sophia and Ava controlled the goal but the offensive unit secured the victory. Tessa, Theresa, and Sadie all scored goals and played as a team to ensure the victory. Amazing team effort and hustle by the entire crew.
