Division 3 Boys

HVSA Black v. Soccer Post. On a sunny Saturday morning, HVSA Black met Soccer Post in the second round of the playoffs for HVSA Division 3 Boys. Soccer Post netted two early goals from strong offense by Mikey Vagott and Luke Hemmer. Carter Horvath stopped many hard shots from Vagott and Hemmer as HVSA goalie. At the end of the first half, Alden Levy lofted a chip for HVSA’s first goal. Dylan Yasher scored an unassisted corner kick to even up the score mid-way through the half, but Soccer Post’s defense provided strong coverage from multiple attacks by HVSA, including many paired runs by Patrick Schouten, Yasher, and Connor Batcha. Vagott made two weaving runs that netted Soccer Post two more goals. HVSA was able to net a third goal with less than 10 minutes left in the game, but Soccer Post held on for the win, 4-3, advancing to the championship game for the season.

HVSA Black v. Piccolo Trattoria. Piccolo Trattoria won third place in the Division 3 Boys season, defeating HVSA Black 4-2 on an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon. Dylan Yasher opened scoring for HVSA early in the game, and strong defense from both sides, including some expert clearing from Matthew Cerocchi and Will Antoun for HVSA, left the score 0-1 at the half. Piccolo scored a hard-fought goal early in the second half to tie the game, then gained momentum with the go-ahead goal a few minutes later and netting a third a few minutes after that. HVSA’s Yasher connected with Patrick Schouten in the goalie box for HVSA’s second goal with about 8 minutes to go in the game, but Piccolo struck a fourth time to finish out the game.

Division 4 Girls

Hopewell’s Jack’s Nursery, for the second consecutive year, have gone undefeated in the U18 Inter County League, with the 7-0 win Friday night at Twin Pines Field against the Hamilton Phantoms.  The first half started off quickly with Carly Brant scoring on a crossing corner pass from Ayla Mauk, and then Amanda Flanders, taking a nice pass from Sierra Mitchell, broke away down the center for her first goal of the game.  Despite these scores happening in the beginning minutes of the game, giving the impression it would be high scoring, the half ended 2-0.  However, the second half scoring started like the first, with a quick score by Ayla Mauk who went down the right side and fired one into the back of the net.  Sonia Tenbarge had the next two goals, with the first being a header off a corner kick by Evy Lansing.  The game then settled down, and ball control was well handled by Jaina Jackowski, Lilly Gagla, and Megan MacDonald.  The final score was by Amanda F. off another assist by Evy.  Holding the Phantoms scoreless was from the tremendous defensive effort of Hailey Addonizio, Piper Brant, Charlotte Catlett, Bella Gaglia, and Lily Panzitta, while Chelsea Kent notched her ninth clean sheet of the season.

Hopewell Valley Central High School

Field Hockey

This week the Hopewell Valley Central Hight School Bulldogs field hockey team played against Nottingham and Lawrence. Nottingham kept Hopewell off the scoreboard for the first three quarters. However, the Bulldogs fought back with Bella DiNardo’s two goals in the last ten minutes of the game. Those two goals tallied up to make DiNardo’s 50th career goal. On Thursday, Hopewell played a well fought game against Lawrence. The Bulldogs were able to get on the scoreboard early with a goal from Caroline Colavita assisted by DiNardo. Lawrence fought back, but Mariel Haynes was consistently strong in cage for Hopewell. Along, with Haynes, the entire Bulldog team contributed to the defensive efforts necessary to limit the opportunities for Lawrence’s offense. DiNardo and Nociolo each tallied a goal later on in the game. Despite the strong efforts of Hopewell, the game ended in a 4-3 loss for the Bulldogs. Next week, the Hopewell Valley field hockey team will go against Robbinsville on Friday for their first rounds of sectionals.

With great thanks to our correspondents including Christian Heiss, Carly Brant, and Todd Brant for HVSA and Bella DiNardo for CHS Field Hockey!  If you would like to submit the write up for your team, please email [email protected]. Weekly deadline is Sunday at 8pm. Photos are encouraged.
