The Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) girls’ swim team had their first meet of the season on Tuesday, November 26. “The Cougar Relays” was an invitational relay meet held at Montgomery High School, with six schools participating. The Invitational offered a chance to swim relays not normally held in a standard meet, which made for a fun start to the season.

The CHS girls won the 200-yard breaststroke relay with a time of 2:22.33 posted by Shriya Karthikvatsan, freshman Ava D’Alessandro, Jade Gamelin Kao and Emilie Sawicki. The team placed second in the 200-yard backstroke relay with a time of 2:08.28 recorded by Shriya Karthikvatsan, Ava D’Alessandro, freshman Regan Sherman and Emilie Sawicki. The girls also placed third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:02.82. Wellness teacher Lauren Ashman is the new coach of the girls swim team. In a very close race during the 200 backstroke relay, Hayden Geurds, Michael Genovesi, Anthony Azara and John Raskin placed 3rd with a time of 2:09.70, only 0.19 seconds behind the 2nd place team. Both the boys and girls teams will swim in their first CVC meet of the year on December 6th at the Pennington School against Trenton High School.

The Hopewell Valley-Montgomery varsity hockey team had their first game as a merged team on Saturday at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm, NJ. The Bulldogs played strong against High Point Regional-Wallkill Valley, which, like the Bulldogs, is a merged hockey team representing two high schools.  Despite the team still suffering from a number of injuries to returning players, goalie Ryan Morici earned a shutout, with the final score of 5-0.  Lucas Gaissert, Harsh Grover, Dan Seamon, Michael Boyer and Roman Vitolo each scored a goal. The next game is Wednesday December 4, against Notre Dame High School at the Mercer County Skating Center. -Tracy Vogler
