The Hopewell Valley-Montgomery high school hockey team started out the week with a tough loss to Notre Dame but followed it with a win over Red Bank later in the week.

In the Notre Dame game, the Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard, with a goal by Lucas Gaissert. That goal was quickly answered by Notre Dame, who dominated the game with goals by Carson Skove, William Celli (3), Jakob Papiez, Michael McVey and Ryan Nemec. Dan Seamon scored the only other goal for Hopewell Valley-Montgomery during the second period. The final score was 7-2, with Notre Dame winning their first game of the season.

Saturday’s game against Red Bank Regional High School saw the Bulldogs return to winning form. Trent Demers had a hat trick, scoring all of the goals in the game. Ryan Morici had another shut out in goal for a 3-0 final score. The varsity Bulldogs play their next game on Wednesday against Robbinsville at the Mercer County Skating Center and the junior varsity opens its season Thursday against Central Regional at the Winding River Skating Center in Toms River. -Tracy Vogler

Last week the Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) girls swim team had their first meet, starting off strong with a 101-45 win over Trenton. Hopewell scored first place in many events, including Natalie Hayward in the 200-yard freestyle 2:42.86, Jade Gamelin Kao in the 200 Individual Medley 2:42.41, Ava D’Alessandro in the 50 freestyle 27.640, Alyssa Liu in the 100 butterfly 1:28.09, Lily Wurtz in the 500 freestyle 6:53.22, Emilie Sawicki in the 100 backstroke 1:16.37 and 100 freestyle 1:16.37, and Regan Sherman in the 100 breaststroke 1:23.95. Hopewell also took first place in the 200-yard medley relay (Sherman, Sawicki, D’Alessandro and Wurtz, 2:05.49), 200-yard freestyle relay (Gamelin Kao, D’Alessandro, Sherman, and Liu, 1:52.07), and the 500-yard freestyle relay (D’Alessandro, Wurtz, Hayward, and Gamelin Kao, 4:32.26). -Christopher Sawicki

The CHS boys swim team also started off the season strong with a win against Trenton, 104-62. Hayden Geurds placed first in two events, the 500 free with a time of 6:08.69 and the 100 back with a time of 1:15.33. Other first place winners include Christopher Sawicki (200 free, 2:12.90), Alex Helmrich (200 IM, 2:21.08), Santiago Soto (50 free, 25.65), Matthew Immordino (100 butterfly, 1:04.40), Owen Seibold (100 free, 57.33) and Alessio Paoloni (100 Breast, 1:11.50). In both the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relays, Paoloni, Immordino, Helmrich and Sawicki took first place with times of 1:52.21 and 3:50.18 respectively. In the 200 freestyle relay, Owen Seibold, Hayden Geurds, Thomas Montanari, and Matthew Immordino placed first with a time of 1:43.84. -Emilie Sawicki

Both CHS swim teams have two away meets this week against Hamilton West on Tuesday and West Windsor Plainsboro North on Thursday

The Hopewell Basketball Association opened the Winter Hoops season on Saturday December 7 at Timberlane Middle School.  In Division 1, for players in grades 3-5, Team Demareski topped  Team Doran 37-24, Team Weiner bested Team Cuccuini 37-24, Team Meccage over Team Luciano 46-14, Team Fornal beat TeamFalconi/DeCore 16-15 and Team Troiano over Team Nami  33-9.  

In Division 2, comprised of players in grades 6-8, Team Luciano topped Kuuskvere 36-34. Team Wille beat Team Weisenfeld 44-42, Team Gold won over Team Berman 36-34, Team HBA 49 won over Team Shin 49-42 and Team Yadamiec topped Team Becker 32-30. -Bob Alton
