Monday Sports Roundup

The Ewing Lady Blue Devils visited the Hopewell Valley Central High School (CHS) girls basketball team last Tuesday and came away with a 49-40 win. CHS was lead by Ally Oldfield (14 points), Charlotte Hare (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Molly Martin (4 points, 11 rebounds).

On Friday, the CHS girls played at home against Princeton and won 46-23. The game’s leading scorer was senior Ally Oldfield with 11 points. Junior Franki Gomez returned after being sidelined due to illness and scored 10 points and 5 steals. The win was a team effort, with eight players scoring.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs visited Stuart, losing 63-21. The leading scorer was Ally Oldfield with 6 points. Senior Molly Martin had great defensive game with 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block while defending much taller Stuart players. The girls’ next game is Tuesday at Robbinsville at 7pm. Their next home game is Friday, January 17 at 5:30 against West Windsor Plainsboro North. -Paul Domboski and Coleen Ross

The CHS girls swim team won one of their three meets last week, defeating Nottingham and falling to Lawrence and Pennington. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs beat Nottingham 126-36 with many first-place finishes, including seniors Jade Gamelin-Kao in the 50 freestyle (27.90), Sion Shambora in the 100 freestyle (1:04.46) and Alyssa Liu in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.98). Shriya Karthikvatsan won the 200 freestyle (2:18.48), Ava D’Alessandro took first in the 500 freestyle (6:14.77), Lilly Wurtz won the 100 backstroke (1:09.31), and Regan Sherman took first in both the 200 IM (2:32.45) and the 100 butterfly (1:08.66). The Bulldogs also won the 200 medley relay (Liu, Gamelin-Kau, Karthikvatsan and Shambora, 2:10.19), the 200 freestyle relay (Liu, Natalie Hayward, Shambora and Gamelin-Kao, 2:07.37), and the 400 freestyle relay (Shambora, Wurtz, Liu and Gamelin-Kao, 4:31.65).

On Thursday, the Bulldogs lost to Lawrence in a close meet by a score of 91-79. Regan Sherman won the 200 freestyle (2:04.59), Ava D’Alessandro took first in the 50 freestyle (26.77) and Emilie Sawicki won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.68). The Bulldogs also won the 200 medley relay (Regan Sherman, Emilie Sawicki, Ava D’Alessandro and Shriya Karthikvatsan, 2:02.60). Hopewell also recorded many second-place finishes in this close meet.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs fell to Pennington by a score of 110-58, with Regan Sherman winning the 500 freestyle (5:31.01), and Regan Sherman, Emilie Sawicki, Ava D’Alessandro and Shriya Karthikvatsan winning the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.35). Hopewell Valley’s next meet is on January 14th, against Princeton. -Christopher Sawicki

The CHS boys swim team also competed in three meets. On Tuesday, they faced Nottingham, winning 101-69. The boys placed first in two of the three relays, with Alessio Paoloni, Anthony Azara, Hayden Geurds and Santiago Soto winning the 200 free relay with a time of 1:41.71, and Michael Genovesi, Hayden Geurds, James Long and Alessio Paoloni placing first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:56.68. Other first-place finishes during the meet included Alex Helmrich (200 freestyle, 2:01.78), Alessio Paoloni (200 IM, 2:05.79), Geurds (100 freestyle, 56.25), Matt Immordino (500 freestyle, 5:42.87) and Anthony Azara (100 backstroke, 1:06.57).

On Thursday, the Bulldogs fell to Lawrence in a close meet by a score of 94-76. The boys recorded several first-place finishes, including Alessio Paoloni in both the 200 IM (2:04.84) and the 100 backstroke (59.19), Christopher Sawicki in the 50 freestyle (24.49), and Matt Immordino in both the 500 freestyle (5:28.34) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.24).

On Saturday the boys took a tough loss to Pennington, falling 103-65. Alessio Paoloni placed first in both the 200 IM (2:03.88) and the 100 backstroke (58.82). Additionally, Alessio Paoloni, Christopher Sawicki, Matt Immordino and Alex Helmrich placed first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:37.04. Despite the difficult meets, the boys had some great swims and some close second-place finishes.

Currently, the Hopewell Valley boys swim team has a record of 6 wins and 3 losses, with two meets coming up next week against Princeton and Steinert. -Emilie Sawicki

The CHS winter track team competed in the Lavino Relays at the Lawrenceville School on Saturday. The team finished 5th in the boys shuttle hurdles (Andrew Carsky-Wilson, Amaury Griffin, Jay Shah, Shrithik Sekar). They finished 6th  in the girls 4×800 (Sofia Venezia, Rebecca Pereyra, Paige Dumont, Elizabeth Chandler). Amaury Giffin placed 6th in the triple jump and  Maddie Castadot was 4th in the high jump. Grant Sherman was 7th in the pole vault. -Aaron Oldfield

On January 6, the Hopewell Valley Montgomery varsity ice hockey team played Notre Dame at the Mercer County Skating Center.  The previous time the two teams had met, Notre Dame won 7-2.   But this time, the Bulldogs prevailed, winning 5-3.  Goals were scored by Lucas Gaissert (2), Michael Boyer, Cal Fleming and Dan Seamon.

On Friday, they played Princeton High School, unbeaten in the Colonial Valley Conference.  But this game did not go in the Bulldogs favor.  Lucas Gaissert, Dan Seamon (2), and Cal Fleming scored, but the final was a loss, 4-12.  Their next game is Monday against St. Rose. -Tracy Vogler
