Hopewell Valley Youth Soccer Association teams are now in the swing of play offs. In the HVSA division 2 girls’ semi-finals, the Hopewell Express team defeated the Jack’s Nursery team 3-0. The Express was powered by scores by Reagan Silvestri, Megan Kurian, and Sloane Ritter.  Ritter, a second grader, set up Silvestri’s goal with a beautiful feed across the defense.  The defense for the Express was flawless on the day and was responsible for the clean sheet.  The defense was led by Grace Haag and Abby Gola and put a wall up in front of goalkeepers Ritter, Kurian, Natalie Frush and Cate Batcha.  For the Jack’s Nursery team, there was great team play, especially the hustle of Jasjot Arora and Maggie Woodside as well as a great first half by goalie Tina Zheng which kept the game tied through halftime. In the third quarter, the Express team pulled away even while Ava Berg and Emily Simpson kept the pressure on but came up empty on the day. In the other Saturday semi-final game, team HVSA Red advanced over team m3.

On Sunday, the Hopewell Express team completed a 12-4-1 season by beating team HVSA Red 2-0 behind goals by Reagan Silvestri and Megan Kurian and a defense anchored by Grace Haag and Abby Gola.  The defense of the Express was especially stout in the playoffs and did not give up a goal in the semi-finals and finals.  Helping maintain the pressure were second graders Lauren Dwyer, Sloane Ritter and Cate Batcha.

In the third-place game, team Jack’s Nursery prevailed 2-0 over team m3, playing another game into the second half scoreless.  This time, Jasjot Arora advanced the ball into the defense of team m3 and Emily Simpson scored the first of two goals to break the tie. Daphne Edmond-Marrietti was a stalwart on defense and Sadie Courtney made some great saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. -Catherine Wilson

In the HVSA division 3 girls’ playoffs, team Pixie Salon defeated the Ewing Red and Ewing Blue teams 2-1 and 3-2 to win the pre-ICL division 3 girls’ championship. In Saturday’s game against Ewing Red, Katie Means scored both goals.  On Sunday against Ewing Blue, Gracie Johnson scored 2 goals and Angelyn Li scored 1 goal. Goalie Samantha Weeast, along with a strong defensive lineup of Sophia Acerenza, Kalina Kirova, Erica Li, Alexandra Rowe, and Kaylie Weeast held off the Ewing teams to take first place. The Live Wires gave the Cats a run for their money in the second half. Austin Yasher played great defense, with the help of Liam Mazur and Robert Litz. Jeremy English and Taegan Levy both took turns in goal, keeping the score at bay. Julian Blunt, Bodhi Brown, John Troiano, and Nathan Blunt kept the pressure on the Live Wires’ goalie.
