Monday Sports Update

Hopewell Valley Central High School

This week, the Hopewell Valley Boys Swim team faced Robbinsville on Tuesday, losing only by seven points, 80-87. However, the meet featured many close races and exciting wins. In the 200 medley relay, Chris Sawicki, Owen Seibold, Joseph Genovesi, and AJ Yadamiec took first by less than one second. Alex Helmrich placed first in both the 200 IM and the 100 fly. Later in the meet, Sawicki placed first in the 100 back and Seibold placed first in the 100 breaststroke. In addition to these first place wins, the Bulldogs also took many second and third place finishes to help them rack up more points. In the 200 free, Alex Nicolai placed second, closely followed by Tyler Mac who placed third. In the 100 free, Seibold took second and Yadamiec took third. In the 400 free relay, Helmrich, Mac, Seibold, and Nicolai placed second, and Pavel Sverdlov, Genovesi, Armaan Desai, and Yadamiec placed third. Overall, the boys swam a great meet, but unfortunately, they were unable to pull out a victory. The Bulldogs finished this week with a 2-2 record. -Emilie Sawicki

Meanwhile the Girls Swim team had one swim meet, against Robbinsville on Tuesday. The meet was extremely close, coming down to the last relay, where Hopewell won first and second place to win the meet by 6 points. For the individual events, Amelie Bass placed first in the 50 yard freestyle (25.97) and second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.11), and Regan Sherman finished first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:43.36) and second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.08). Ava D’Alessandro placed 2nd in the 100 yard freestyle, May Hartog finished 2nd in the 100 yard backstroke, and Emilie Sawicki placed 2nd in both the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke. The Bulldogs also won the 400 yard freestyle relay (Sherman, Anna Wurtz, D’Alessandro, Bass, 4:05.81) and also placed second (Claire Christie, Kelley Dwyer, Hartog, Sawicki, 4:24.74). Hopewell finished second in the 200 yard medley relay (Hartog, Sawicki, Christie, Dwyer, 2:05.77) and the 200 yard freestyle relay (Bass, D’Alessandro, Wurtz, Sherman, 1:48.23) as well. This week the Bulldogs will swim against Princeton on Tuesday 12/21. -Christopher Sawicki

Boys Basketball – Friday was opening night for a new basketball season as Hopewell Valley played host to the West Windsor-Plainsboro South Pirates.  Hopewell Valley came away with the 67-64 overtime victory. The Bulldogs rained 3 pointers early in the game on the strength of Brendan O’Reilly (20 points) and Aiden Sullivan (12 points). Brian O’Reilly tossed in 13 points while Ryan Kuuskvere chipped in with 11. WW-P South scrapped and hustled their way back in the 4th quarter to force overtime.  Ben Jaclin led all scorers with 24 points and Ricky Boone was close behind with 23.  But in the end, it was the Bulldogs team depth that propelled them to victory.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs traveled to Voorhees High School.  In an up and down first half, Voorhees pulled away in the second half to earn a 46-38 win.  Brian O’Reilly led the Bulldogs with13 points and Mac Torpey followed with 8. For Voorhees, Justin Vernieri led all players with14 points and Justin Wistuda had 13.  -Paul Domboski

Girls Basketball
The Girls opened their season Friday also, traveling to West Windsor-Plainsboro South.  In a one sided affair, the Bulldogs handled the Pirates a 51-16.  Led by the 3 points efforts of Hailey Rowe and Gillian Magner, 15 and 13 points respectively. Talia Black led the Pirates with 7 points.
  
Saturday afternoon brought all the drama a fan could ever want.  Delaware Valley visited the Bulldogs.  While only leading very early in the game, Delaware proved to be a worthy adversary.  But it was Isabella Randazzo of Hopewell Valley who scored her only basket of the game, with less than 5 seconds left in overtime to give the Bulldogs the 46-45 win. Del Val’s Carol Anne Bredeson led all scorers with 19 points. Andie Capucci led the Bulldogs with 16, and Gillian Magner 14v -Paul Domboski
