HVCHS Girls Swim This week, the Hopewell Valley Girls Swim team took a tough loss against Princeton, scoring 43-127. Lily Wurtz, Emilie Sawicki, Reagan Sherman and Ava D’Alessandro took second in the 200 Medley relay with a time of 2:03.52. In the 500 free, Sherman placed second (5:30.53) and Anna Wurtz placed fourth (6:15.54), while in the 100 breaststroke Sawicki placed second with a time of 1:15.88. In the 50 free, D’Alessandro took 3rd (27.41) and Lily Wurtz took 4th (27.61).
The prior week, the Hopewell Valley’s Girls Swim team kicked off their season with a meet against West-Windsor Plainsboro South, enduring a tough loss of 103-67. Lily Wurtz, Sawicki, Sherman and D’Alessandro placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:01.64. Sherman claimed two first places in the 200 free (2:05.97) and the 500 free (5:31.32), while Amelie Bass placed first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.96.
Later that week, the girls earned a win against Robbinsville by a score of 108-62. D’Allessandro placed first in both the 50 free (27.10) and the 100 free (1:03.04) while Shriya Karthikvatsan placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.61. Sawicki, May Alice Hartog, Claire Christie and Anna Wurtz placed first in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:02.60.
HVCHS Boys Swim On Tuesday February 23, the Hopewell Valley Boys Swim Team had a meet against West Windsor-Plainsboro South and Ewing. They lost 114-56 against West Windsor-Plainsboro South. The boys came in first place the 200 yard medley relay, swimming 1:51.52 (Christopher Sawicki, Owen Seibold, Alex Nicolai and Alexander Helmrich). Sawicki placed first in the 50 yard freestyle (24.29) and placed highest for Hopewell in the 100 yard backstroke (1:06.59).
Helmrich had the fastest times for Hopewell Valley in the 200 yard individual medley (2:21.20) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:42.71), while Nicolai led Hopewell in the 200 yard freestyle (1:56.45) and the 100 yard butterfly (57.58). Michael Genovesi swam fastest for the Bulldogs in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.43), while Owen Seibold led the boys in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:14.61). Hopewell’s best time in the 200 yard freestyle relay was 1:53.62 (Seibold, Genovesi, AJ Wilson and Thomas Montonari), while the fastest 400 yard freestyle relay went 3:46.39 (Helmrich, Genovesi, Nicolai, and Sawicki).
Because Hopewell also swam the meet against Ewing, the same times counted, but Hopewell beat Ewing in the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard medley relay, 200 yard freestyle relay, and the 400 yard freestyle relay. On Thursday February 25, the boys swam against Steinert and Robbinsville. They lost 87.5-82.5 against Robbinsville. The boys came in first place the 200 yard medley relay, swimming 1:54.37 (Sawicki, Genovesi, Nicolai, Helmrich). Helmrich placed first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.67) and Nicolai placed first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:14.58). Armaan Desai placed first in the 100 yard breastroke (1:17.68). Helmrich swam fastest for Hopewell Valley in the 200 yard freestyle (2:02.31), as did Nicolai in the 500 yard freestyle (5:16.98). Montonari led Hopewell in the 50 yard freestyle (27.47), while Sawicki led the boys in the 100 yard freestyle (56.01) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.12). The fastest 200 yard freestyle relay for Hopewell was 1:52.84 (Montonari, Wilson, AJ Yademic, Genovesi), while the fastest 400 yard freestyle relay finished at 3:51.11 (Helmrich, Sawicki, Yademic, Nicolai).
Because Hopewell also swam the meet against Steinert the same times counted, but Hopewell beat Steinert in the 200 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard medley relay, 200 yard freestyle relay, and the 400 yard freestyle relay. Hopewell Valley beat Steinert by a total score of 106-59.
CHS Girls Basketball On Monday, the Hopewell Valley Girls basketball team concluded their regular season against winless Trenton. Ten different players contributed to the 61-32 win. Leading the Bulldogs was Franki Gomez with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Andie Cappucci and Hailey Rowe followed with 13 points each and Gillian Magner had 10 to finish double digit scoring.
Wednesday, the Bulldogs hosted the Lawrence Cardinals in Pod B of the Colonial Valley Conference tournament. Ensured was a close, physical game resulting in a 40-34 Bulldog victory. Franki Gomez drove the Hopewell Valley team with 20 points and 4 steals. Acadia Kurtz had 9 rebounds. Andie Cappucci and Gillian Magner each had 8 points.
HV/Montgomery Hockey The Colonial Valley Conference tournament kicked off on Monday. The Hopewell Valley/ Montgomery team faced Lawrence in the opening game. In the two teams’ most recent meeting, Lawrence had defeated HVM 3-1. This time was difference. Bobby Ruger, assisted by Michael Paster, scored the first goal of the game. Lawrence answered it with a power play goal. But that was the end for Lawrence. In the first period, Lucas Gaissert, assisted by goalie Aidan Schaefer, and Sean Amon, assisted by Lucas Gaissert, set up a lead that was maintained throughout the game. In the second, Michael Paster, assisted by Andrew Seamon, started things off. Andrew Seamon added to the HVM total with a penalty shot. Lucas Gaissert, assisted by Sean Amon, made it 6-1 for the Bulldogs. In the third period, Billy Ruger added another unassisted goal to the total, making the final a 7-1 win for HVM.
The semi-final game on Wednesday was against top seeded Notre Dame. In the first, the Irish were up 2-0 before the Lucas Gaissert, assisted by Sean Amon, scored the first Bulldog goal. But Notre Dame added another goal, ending the first period 3-1. In the second period, the Irish scored twice more. Despite their efforts, the HVM team was unable to score, making it 5-1. Neither team scored in the third, making Notre Dame the winner of the semi-final round, and off to the finals on Friday, where they were defeated by Robbinsville.
